Guest guest
I have never really had any problems with being in crowds, but there have been several occasions (mostly when I was pregnant) that just going to Walmart I would have to find somewhere to sit down because I would have sudden attaks of nausea, cold sweats, dizziness, and even sometimes the 'diarrhea rumble' in the bottom of my stomach. I am not sure if this was directly connected to CMT or being pregnant, but that is the closest I have come to being uncomfortable in a crowded place. Guest guest
Good question Gretchen: As for me, crowds, as a rule, don't bother me. It's dependant on my mood on any particular day. If I'm having a " patch of it " (thanks for that expression my UK friends), I tend to be irritable around people who tend to stare at me with my brace and " scooter " or don't give way as I'm trying to navigate in a crowd. I wish I had a quarter (inflation you know) for every time I've had to say, " behind you " , while navigating on my electric scoot. People just stare and don't realize I'm not a side show for their entertainment and am just doing what they are - trying to get on with what I and they are doing. It's actually quite funny at times, I must say. Especially at the level I find myself when behind people on a crowed sidewalk or in a crowed mall. I'll leave the rest to your imagination. LOL Being a submariner, I'm quite used to being around people in close quarters for very long durations. So, on the whole, my answer would have to be no, crowds don't bother me. rQn I PS I just did spell check and ya know I do believe this is the very first time " it " didn't have to correct one word. I'm truly elated at this moment!
Guest guest
I put a bicycle bell on my scooter. It works and most of the time it brings a smile to everyone's faces. Jeanann
Guest guest
I also have to join the list of people who " hate " being in a crowd. It is very easy for me to be pushed off balance and bump into someone else. This can also look like I am drunk, then I really get looks from people. Confined spaces also bother me. The other day I was walking into a small office and there was a guy sitting in a chair with his legs sticking out towards the door. He was not doing this intentionally, it's just the way the chair sets in relation to the door & small room. When I stopped to position myself to step over his legs, he tells me " man...I just can't move back any more " . I didn't like this comment because this person was a State Trooper and made the comment with a certain authoritative tone talking down to me. OK...now I'm just ranting, so I'll shut up. So yes, it is very frustrating for some people with CMT to be in crowds and/or confined spaces. Personally, I think this is made worse by the fact that many times people (strangers) don't know that the person has any disabilities. So when the person with CMT needs more space, they think the person is trying to be dominating. Or if the CMT'er is stumbling, some people may assume the CMT'er is drunk. I have even had people make comments to me such as " if your shoes hurt your feet, they why did you wear them? " That person was assuming that the way I walk was caused by my shoes hurting my feet....what an idiot! Rob
Guest guest
Jeanann: I have a " horn " , if you want to call it that, on my " scoot " , however, when I push the little button it sound that comes out causes everyone to run for the exits as it sounds like a very loud smoke detector scream. rQn I PS I'm still looking for a " diving alarm " to install on my scooter. That should do the trick
