Guest guest
I've read all the posts & can relate to most. My Dad & I find that we can't walk next to each other because we " run " into each other more than helping (we both have CMT, but his worse than mine). What I try to do is walk ahead of him. That way I can feel the terrain out and let him know of any sudden step ups or down, etc. My Mom does the same. One of the hardest situations is steps that have fancy patterns on carpet (like casinos)! We both find the colors run together, which makes us unable to distinguish where the steps are. As for direct assistance, we find that having someone's arm to hold onto throws our balance off worse. I look for railings everywhere I go & my husband's arm is a last resort. Also, I've learned a few subtle tricks w/ Dad. He has " claw " hands (my CMT is mild in the hands - for now) & he has difficulty opening small things. I make sure when we're at a restaurant, I always pull the tops off the little butter tubs as soon as the bread basket arrives!
