(A few weeks ago I posted news about Office Depot's Corporate Donation

for the new Scripps Child Neurological Center to be built in Florida.

Here's more info)

Who's helping Scripps happen?

Sunday, May 23, 2004

A. Lerner, 65, a medical doctor, scientist and president of The

Scripps Research Institute. He's the brain and the driving personality

behind Scripps in La Jolla, Calif., and Scripps Florida. His own

research led, among other things, to medicine to treat rheumatoid

arthritis. Gov. Bush, who negotiated with him to bring Scripps to

Florida, said of Dr. Lerner: " He's a kick in the pants. He's a visionary

and a great salesman. "

Weissmann, 72, a Swiss scientist who specializes in the study of

mad cow and other infectious diseases, will be Scripps' chief scientist

in Palm Beach County and lead an immunology research group.

K.C. Nicolaou, 57, head of the chemistry research group in La Jolla,

also will run a lab in Palm Beach County. His work has resulted in 79

patent applications and led to discoveries with applications in cancer

treatment and combatting high cholesterol.

Hogenesch, 36, is a Gainesville-born expert in genetics and cell

signaling. He will oversee a lab and a technology group that will

develop robotics equipment.

, 40, has been the chief scientific officer at ExSAR, a

biotech start-up firm in New Jersey. He's an expert in finding optimal

ways for drug molecules to act on human proteins.

Congxin 'Chris' Liang, 41, has more than 20 patents related to drug

discovery, especially in cancer research.

Reyes, 34, studies how changes in the central nervous system

affect appetite and metabolism, which has implications for diabetes.

W. Dreyfoos Jr., 72, a private investor from Palm Beach and

chairman of the F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. He

won't work as a scientist at Scripps — though he studied physics at

M.I.T. — but he is this area's most prominent member of the Scripps

board of trustees.

Warren Beatty, 67, President, Mulholland Productions Incorporated. Not a

scientist, so far as we know. But, yes, he's that Warren Beatty and,

he's also a member of the Scripps board of trustees.
