Here's more info) Who's helping Scripps happen? Sunday, May 23, 2004 A. Lerner, 65, a medical doctor, scientist and president of The Scripps Research Institute. He's the brain and the driving personality behind Scripps in La Jolla, Calif., and Scripps Florida. His own research led, among other things, to medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Gov. Bush, who negotiated with him to bring Scripps to Florida, said of Dr. Lerner: " He's a kick in the pants. He's a visionary and a great salesman. " Weissmann, 72, a Swiss scientist who specializes in the study of mad cow and other infectious diseases, will be Scripps' chief scientist in Palm Beach County and lead an immunology research group. K.C. Nicolaou, 57, head of the chemistry research group in La Jolla, also will run a lab in Palm Beach County. His work has resulted in 79 patent applications and led to discoveries with applications in cancer treatment and combatting high cholesterol. Hogenesch, 36, is a Gainesville-born expert in genetics and cell signaling. He will oversee a lab and a technology group that will develop robotics equipment. , 40, has been the chief scientific officer at ExSAR, a biotech start-up firm in New Jersey. He's an expert in finding optimal ways for drug molecules to act on human proteins. Congxin 'Chris' Liang, 41, has more than 20 patents related to drug discovery, especially in cancer research. Reyes, 34, studies how changes in the central nervous system affect appetite and metabolism, which has implications for diabetes. W. Dreyfoos Jr., 72, a private investor from Palm Beach and chairman of the F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. He won't work as a scientist at Scripps — though he studied physics at M.I.T. — but he is this area's most prominent member of the Scripps board of trustees. Warren Beatty, 67, President, Mulholland Productions Incorporated. Not a scientist, so far as we know. But, yes, he's that Warren Beatty and, he's also a member of the Scripps board of trustees.
