PM to head National Council on AIDS

Press Trust of India

New Delhi, January 5, 2005 | 21:09 IST

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will head the National Council on AIDS,

the highest policy making body in the AIDS control effort, according

to an announcement in New Delhi on Wednesday.

This is expected to bring about necessary inter-sectoral coordination

in the campaign against AIDS, making it more effective, a PMO

spokesman said.

A request to the Prime Minister for heading the Council was made by

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, he said.

The UPA Government's National Common Minimum Programme states that the

National AIDS control effort would be provided leadership at the

highest level.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was also taking steps to

revamp the organisational structure at the state and district levels

for effective implementation of the AIDS control programme.
