Guest guest
, Print this out and take it to your geneticist. There is hope now for couples who wish to have a family without passing on CMT. This type of invitro is only available for a few CMT types; it is also expensive, but this could be an option for you. We have had a few posts on this before and several people in our group have conceived this way; the result being non-CMT-affected offspring. http://www.cmtworld.org/epublisher/publish/article_61.php It is a shame your doctor couldn't have been more up to date on the matter, but I hope the geneticist will be. ~ G
Guest guest
Dear , This is just my personal opinion only and to have or not have children is a very personal decision that can be made only by yourself and your husband. I am a registered nurse. Your physician's advice about seeing a genetic counselor is a wise recommendation. Given what you indicated he said to you, I also do not fault him either in being frank and honest with you. Secondly, knowing what I know now about CMT, I would have elected not to have children had I known that I had this disease. My mother, sister, myself and now my son have CMT. None of use were diagnosed until 1996. I have not been too terribly bothered by symptoms, etc. until this past year and it has hit like a ton of bricks. I am 48 yrs. old. CMT affects each one of us very differently. My son, 17yrs., has already stated he is not going to have children as he does not want to pass this on to anyone else. Pretty heavy for a 17yr. old., but my husband and I admire him greatly for his convictions in this regard. I wish you peace as you and your husband make your decision.
