Guest guest
My husband doesn't like (read want to try) kefir, but likes the smoothies I make. We do one ripe banana, a handful of frozen (or fresh) strawberries and about 2 cups of kefir. Milk to thin if it is too thick or ice cubes. I have also done one ripe banana, about 2 cups kefir and Quik chocolate syrup to taste. And a small spoonful of peanut butter if you like chocolate and peanut butter together. Pretty much any fruit combo will do for a sweeter smoothie, let your imagination run free with this basic recipe and whatever fresh/frozen fruit you can find. kathryn > > I have extra kifer currently which I would love to turn into smoothies. Guest guest
My morning Kefir Smoothie recipie is as follows: To 1 qt cold kefir I add: Frozen straberries, bananas, blueberries, a small square of frozen passion fruit, guava, and mango pulp (from freezer area of Walmart), couple of squeezes of my honey (from the backyard) and two scoops of protein powder and some ice. Blend. Also, I will sometimes add a scoop of Garden of Life Super Seed Beyond Fiber (from Amazon). I usually drink one cup on the way to work and put another in the freezer and have around breaktime. Guest guest
Hi Katrina... I dont usually keep orange juice in the house, but a few months ago we had colds, so I bought some. Just in a experiment, I made a drink half OJ and half kefir. It was amazing. I thought it would curdle, but did not. Any kid would love it...like a dreamcicle. Could also tuck some other worthwhile ingredients. Another one is with chocolate whey and if for an adult..add some instant decaf coffee For a mocha flavor. Raspberries added are good too. Have fun! Guest guest
My favorite of all is just some cinnamon and sweetener. I put it in the blender so it mixes in real well. It tastes so yummy. > > > > > > > > I have extra kifer currently which I would love to turn into smoothies. > > > Currently, I'm the only one drinking kifer, but am hoping a yummy > > smoothie > > > will interest my children... > > > > > > > > Thanks in advance, > > > > Katrina > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
All these sound good. I'm looking forward to trying these recipes. The dreamcicle one, I'm about 99% sure will be a hit with my children! Thank you everyone. Yummy! Katrina > > > > I have extra kifer currently which I would love to turn into smoothies. Guest guest
Sorry this is coming so late, but I had issues with posting before. I've got a boatload of kids with different tastes, so I've experimented a bit with recipes. Lots of mine began as imitations of Starbucks, and I now prefer my own concoctions to theirs. I have a Tribest personal blender and I purchased extra cups and commuter lids for my kids. The neighborhood kids have tasted and like the recipes below and are jealous that my kids get these every day. We began making these with raw milk, and once I had kefir we either changed over completely or did a little of both. I figured it was better to get 2 oz of kefir into my kids than none. Over time we've bumped up the kefir to milk ratio as we got used to the flavor. Hope this is useful to someone, even if it's coming late. > > Here are our current favorites: > > Green Tea (the favorite of two of my children) > 2-4 oz kefir (depending on how tangy it is) > then fill to 8 oz with milk > 1 heaping teaspoon matcha powder > honey to taste (start with 1 T) > ice cubes > > I personally like this one better than what I can get at Starbucks. > > > Chocolate Mint (the favorite of two other of my children) > 4 oz kefir > 4 oz milk > 1 T cocoa or carob powder > mint extract (depending on how strong it is, a few drops to 1/2 teaspoon) > honey to taste > ice cubes > > Vanilla Mint > same as above, but instead of the cocoa, add 1 t vanilla extract > > No-Bake Oatmeal (the favorite of yet another) > 4 oz kefir > 4 oz milk > 3-4 T oatmeal > 1T cocoa powder > 1 teaspoon or so peanut butter (optional: I sometimes don't feel like getting it out) > honey or other sweetener to taste > ice > > Pumpkin Spice > 8 oz of kefir/milk combo > canned or frozen cooked pumpkin, maybe 1 T or so > honey or sweetener to taste > pumpkin pie spices to taste (cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.) > ice > > My mom does one with cold coffee and says it is fabulous. I've done one with strong cold chai tea as well. These (and my recipes above) do not cover up the tangyness of the kefir, so you need to sweeten them a little more, and maybe start with the kefir/milk ratio a bit heavy on the milk side and add more kefir each day until you find a good compromise. > > and finally > The Fruit Smoothie. Guest guest
Hi Katrina, My latest favorite smoothie is made with raw milk kefir, a banana, a scoop of Mercola's vanilla protein powder (I add the vanilla protein powder to all of my smoothies for an extra punch. It is one of the best ones I have found as it is made with organic grass fed raw cow milk), a dash of cardamon, a few dashes of cinnamon, and a little extra vanilla (just because I love it!). The cardamon caresses the cinnamon creating a delightful taste bud experience. It is delish and I still have not tired of the wonderful flavor as of yet. Another is a mango, banana and pineapple with a dash vanilla and a scoop of vanilla protein powder in my raw milk kefir. If you add some fresh coconut it tastes like a healthy PIna Colada. Yum! I also like using vanilla, a few pieces of candied ginger and a banana along with a scoop of vanilla protein powder in my raw milk kefir smoothie. Tastes like a Boston cooler made with Vernors Ginger Ale. (It is a Detroit thing, LOL!) Now this one will sound odd, but if you like the zip of a little heat along with your sweet try a smoothie with dry apricots, candied ginger, scoop of vanilla protein powder and a dash or two of cayenne pepper. Double yum! If you like berries I have made a raspberry and peach smoothie with just a touch of cardamon in the raw milk kefir. I add ice to thicken it up some. For the chocolate cravings I grind up a dagoba high cocoa content dark chocolate bar (you can use the Dagoba cocoa powder, but I like the bits of chocolate in my smoothie), banana, vanilla powder and decaf expresso in the raw milk kefir. For the children you can leave out the expresso, but it really enhances the chocolate flavor. . For a taste of Mexico add cinnamon and cayenne pepper. Yummy and warming. (I use banana a lot as a thickener because it sweetens and it is neutral enough in flavor to allow most of the other ingredients to shine through.). If you need these to be sweeter try a drop or two of stevia. I hope this gives you some ideas. Please share any you come up with. Enjoy! Carol G. Guest guest
Hi, The idea of getting the cardamon seed is so you can grind it fresh to reap the full flavor as pre-ground can oxidize and lose some of its flavor. Grind it (use a clean coffee grinder, a mortor and pestal, smash it with a mallet, a grater or smash it between two spoons into very small pieces at least the consistency of ground coffee or you will be hit with a lot of flavor as you bite it) then add it when you make your smoothie. I would not add it while it is brewing as some spices have anti-bacterial properties naturally and may slow down the brewing process or harm your grains. I am not sure how potent their anti-bacteral properties are so I wait to add it when I make the smoothie. I hope this answers your question. Carol G > > This is a question for cardamom users. I bought some whole cardamon " pods " (used for lack of what to call them) at the encouragement of someone who likes to add that to green tea. I assume I just drop a whole seed thingy into hot tea and steep. > > How would I use my seeds to flavor kefir? And how do you use anything solid, for that matter? Like Ginger? Do you put it all together and let it ferment overnight again?
Guest guest
My kids love them! They like them best with frozen mixed berries, a little banana, and some stevia powder. Last night I put a little coconut oil in there with the berries and stevia (no banana this time) and it covered up the tanginess and I loved the hint of coconut flavor it gave it.
