Guest guest
could anyone tell me why when I drink water kefir it would cause HORRIBLE stomach acid? That's no doubt that's what it is! I can feel it all the way up into my throat. Today I drank a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted with water to get rid of the acid and it helps wonderfully, but I would love to avoid the painful process all together is possible!! Guest guest
That's interesting...most have found kefir to alleviate an acid stomach, though I only know about milk kefir, personally. Have you tried making milk kefir? Maybe switch to the milk kefir and see if it does better for you. I make mine with goat milk these days and it is delicious. > > could anyone tell me why when I drink water kefir it would cause HORRIBLE > stomach acid? That's no doubt that's what it is! Guest guest
If you just started drinking it, you may be detoxing some. Hang on for a week or two. When I started drinking it, I had bad gas and a bad odor from my bowels. If I get out of the habit, and then start again it comes back, but doesn't last as long. Guest guest
Kerrie, The reason I bought kefir grains was to get myself off of Nexium. I have/had severe reflux for 25 years. I started out using apple cider vinegar, digestive enzymes, papaya enzymes, even hydrochloric acid pills. They helped a bit but I have been drinking both water and milk kefir for about 3 weeks and I have no heartburn anymore. Since I am taking both I don't know which is helping. I love them both. They are magic.I don't take any of the supplements anymore, just the kefir. There are 2 things that gave temporary relief of heartburn. One was the papaya enzymes and the other was just eating a red apple. Believe it or not they both work. But the kefir has totally stopped my heartburn. Guest guest
Hi Kerrie, I also had problems both upper and lower gastric distress. I started using store bought kefir and noticed initially diarrhea then just frequent normal stools. After a few day my body adjusted. When I made my own milk kefir I had diarhea again and and gastritis and reflux. These also subsided in a few days. I used nothing but just waited it out. I would think using the cider vinegar might interfere with the ph for the bacteria and yeast. aaaaat least if you take it close to taking the kefir. Dom at Doms kefir.com suggests starting out slow and gradually increasing the kefir. He also suggests taking it just before breakfast and after supper. I might add to remain upright and not go to bed right after drinking the kefir. Dom also said that if you have a problem you probably had one before drinking the kefir. I know I did. All is fine now with an adjustment in just a few weeks. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Dear Kerrie Knox I used to have that trouble exactly has how you described it when I first started to drink the water kefir, only it was not as bad as yours is. Mine was a slight burning. I have found that if I drink the milk and water kefir after I have a big meal, I do not have that problem. I drink 2 cups of milk kefir and one cup of water kefir as soon as I am finished eating my lunch and supper dinners. It does help. I know that Don recommends that you drink the water kefir first thing in the am with a empty stomach, but I can not do that. Hope that this helps you. Thanks for the hint about taking the apple cider vinegar to reduce the acid. My grandfather used to dissolved baking soda into water and drink it when he had an upset stomach. Guest guest
Thanks Colleen for pointing out the relation to meals! I had a hunch, but it helps to hear from someone else (especially when other sources say to drink on an empty stomach). I am in the habit of drinking the water kefir when I am hungry and trying to stretch to the next meal or while preparing a meal. I have been drinking water kefir off an on for over a year. I also drink milk kefir a few times a week and I buy kombucha occasionally too. We also make fermented pickles and sauerkraut so I am not new to ferments, just this occasional acid problem, which I have never struggled with before, but when I have it, it's bad! Thanks again!! I will be sure to drink smaller amounts and with or after food! Guest guest
Thanks from me, too. I was very confused about the pain in my stomach and was thinking I was developing an ulcer because one spot burned pretty bad when I drank water kefir, which I was expecting to help. I must have drunk too much on an empty stomach over a period of time. I was doing a second ferment in coconut water. I also appreciate the note someone made of drinking ACV to relieve the pain. Amazing stuff! Best wishes, Benton > > > ** > > > > > > could anyone tell me why when I drink water kefir it would cause HORRIBLE > > stomach acid? That's no doubt that's what it is!
