Guest guest
I do not know about the goat's milk, but you can order grains from Marilyn that runs this group. I got mine from her almost a year ago, and they're still plugging away. Her website is http://kefirlady.com/ and you can read about how to order there. I don't think I'd be too trusting of kefir from Aldi's (or any store). A lot of places sell yogurt drinks with bacteria added in and call it kefir, but that is not really kefir. When you make it yourself, you will see what I mean. I'm glad you want to make it yourself...it's way better for you. I have some info on kefir here: http://chicagohealthygirl.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/probiotic-foods-101/ If you're interested in what I have to say on the matter, haha. And some people share a few things in the comments that are helpful, too. Otherwise, you should get answers to your questions here...I've never posted a question here that at least someone in here couldn't answer! > > Hello, everyone. > > My name is Kim Huse, and I live in the Dallas/Forth Worth area in Texas. > > We moved here from Mo last year; my husband is a born and bred DFW Texan, so it was just a matter of time before we came back. > > A bit of backgropund on me: I'm in my 40's, happily married, and I am on a mission to get my health back on track. > > My family used to raise milk goats; we had Nubians, La Manchas, Saanens, Alipnes and Nigerian dwarves, so I am familiar with good milk handling techniques and how to make home made cheeses and such; that was back in the 1980's, and befoire we had the internet, so I didn't know about kefir then, or I would have been making that as well. > > I just this last week found out about kefir, and kefir grains....I was lucky enough to find bottled for consumption kefir at our local Aldi's, believe it or not; its flavored with bueberry juice; its okay, but I would really like to just have the plain kefir. > > I'm hoping that some one in the DFW area has some grains to share so that I can start making my own kefir; I would also like to find a good source for raw goats milk; I really do miss having some goats milk in the fridge... > > I REALLY like the sour taste of buttermilk made from cow's milk like my grandmother used to make...and I can tell with the store bought kefir I have, the underlying taste is the exact same taste as what my grandmother made. Guest guest
Hi Kim, Boy, are you in luck!!! There are lots of places that have milk in your area. Here is the link to where you can find it. http://www.realmilk.com/where09.html#tx If you can't find milk kefir grains in your area, I have some I can send you, I'm in NY. I used to live in San and wished I knew about the raw milk when I lived there. I culture them in organic raw grass-fed, grass-finished Jersey cow's milk. You can have them in 2-3 days once I send them priority mail. My grains grow like crazy. Al Newby Hello, everyone. I am also looking forward to making some kefir cheese; I have not found a cows milk cottage cheese here under any brand that I like... I am also interested in working with the water kefir grains, too; but I want to get the milk grains going first. One step at a time... I am looking forward to being on this list and findoing out about kefir and how to care for it and how to cook with it; looking forward to using it for pancakes and muffins for sure!; Thank you for approving me to be on this list! So, I suppose my first 2 questions were kind of covered int my introduction: Does anyone here in the DFW area have any grains to share..or know where I can get grains from? And where can I find Grade A goats milk? Thanks! -- Kim Huse

Guest guest
Hello Kim, Welcome to the group! I live southwest of San but I would be happy to ship some grains to you. Send me a private email and we can work out the details. As far as fresh goats milk you might check with local health food stores or even the local feed stores. You can also check the website rawmilk.com. Here is the link to the Texas page. I'm not sure if they list goats milk there or not but you can find raw cows milk for sure. Hope this helps!
