How long can kefir grains last?

I'm wondering how many days kefir grains can survive without milk or

refrigeration. I'm mailing kefir grains to a friend, and I put them in the mail

Tuesday morning and they were supposed to arrive today, or tomorrow at the

latest. Well, they haven't even left my post office yet. The grains are rinsed

and triple bagged, and I'm starting to get worried out them.
