Guest guest
For those of you familiar with my " Cottage Cheese Yumminess " Aka " Cottage Cheese Treat " I have amended it, to help get more fiber. Now, I eat 1/2 cup to 1 cup of Fat Free Cottage cheese, 1/2 a cup of blueberries, 1/2 a cup of All-Bran, and sometimes about 6 to 10 almonds. Lot's of fiber and let's just say, <T.M.I. alert!> I have a very happy colon. > On Mon, 07 Mar 2005 19:26:10 -0000, <chevygirl57@c...> wrote: > > > > > > I have been getting somewhat constipated lately. Guest guest
Hello Marcia, I'm curious what the patients diet is. If they are sticking with the normal post-op program, perhaps she can try consuming more water. Benefiber, Metamucil and good old prune juice can help as well. Hopefully it won't continue but there is prescription medication called MiraLax that the patient can get from the doctor. Beatrice M. Guest guest
Hi Dave, Eddie's constipation took us sometime to deal with. Plenty of Vit C and magnesium does help. Eddie has 2 g of Biocare vit C as magensium ascorbate and we also give magnesium glycinate. Actually very early on with constipation we used a tiny amount of epsom salts (we would count no more than a dozen small crystals and give it a day to work). This was before we knew much about biomed and were just desperate to get him moving. What we learnt was that epsom salts are very potent indeed - I'm not sure I'd recommend them (certainly not over oxypowder) Earlier this year it took 7 oxypowders (!!) to move Eddie. Of course we started very low and worked up. Eddie actually took the oxypowder mixed in his old baby bottle (that he still has at night) just with water. You probably tried this first but just thought I'd mention it. The Oxypowder really did a great job and made him so much more comfortable. Best wishes Sandy
Guest guest
Hi Dave, Vit C and Magnesium can work wonders with constipation, but i think first you need to do something to clear out the backed up stuff. Oxypowder will do this but as your son is refusing to take it you may need to try some prescription meds. You could try a combination of the following: Lactulose - stool softener Sodium Picosulphate - powerful stimulant laxative and Dulco-lax bisacodyl suppositories also a powerful stimulant laxative Lactulose is very easy to get down as it is a sweet syrup but is unlikely to do much in your case without a stimulant to help things along. The sodium picosulphate is very strong, but works well, it will most likely cause some degree of abdominal pain as it does its work, so be prepared for this. I believe its not to be used if there is a bowel blockage. The suppositories are my standby item if things will not shift. They are very strong and will do the job in about an hour, be prepared for a degree of pain and discomfort with these also. I haven't had to use these for some time now since doing an oxypowder clear-out, but they are what got us through some of the worst constipation episodes you could ever imagine. Perhaps have a chat with your Doc about what to use, if he is not very helpful i know you can buy lactulose and the suppositories OTC, not sure about the sodium Pico. Good Luck, let me know if i can help any more. Nikki

Guest guest
Oxypowder is the only thing that has really helped in 8 yrs of extreme bowel problems for my son. It has enabled him to leave the scd diet and eat potatoes and rice again. It really really helps. I would pursue this before prescription meds which have side effects. > > Hi Dave, > > Vit C and Magnesium can work wonders with constipation, but i think > first you need to do something to clear out the backed up stuff. > Oxypowder will do this but as your son is refusing to take it you > may need to try some prescription meds. > > You could try a combination of the following: > > Lactulose - stool softener > > Sodium Picosulphate - powerful stimulant laxative > > and Dulco-lax bisacodyl suppositories also a powerful stimulant > laxative > > Lactulose is very easy to get down as it is a sweet syrup but is > unlikely to do much in your case without a stimulant to help things > along. > > The sodium picosulphate is very strong, but works well, it will most > likely cause some degree of abdominal pain as it does its work, so > be prepared for this. Guest guest
When you say oxy helped your son's bowel problems, were those mainly constipation, or mixed? we have been trying to leave SCD, but no luck so far. even with enzymes it looks like he just cannot take even a small handful of carbs we had awful undigested smelly bm before going SCD, on it we had a mix of normal stools with constipation (actually he was always regular, bm at least once a day, but it was in form of 'rabbit droppings' pellets for a long time). when we added enzymes and some herbs we finally saw normal perfect bms for the first time ever and though 'yeeeeeah, lets up the enzymes and add some carbs. complete disaster. few days and a handful of (flavourless) crisps and corn puffs later and we saw those runny awful stuff again... Guest guest
I don't know if it is ok to post about another chat site but I guess I will find out. We belong to a tethered cord health chat site and they had dialog going on for weeks about constipation and miralax. It started around March 1 and went on until about March 16 I think. I don't know if the info might help but many of these people have tried a lot of different avenues because it is a common problem among tethered cord patients. It is the LMC-TCS group - you might just get some ideas. and Connor (2 - detethered scoliosis 9/06) > Hi , > Thanks for the quick response! Guest guest
Constipation is a constant battle at our house too. It seems as though many of the connective tissue disorders have constipation issues due to a far too stretchy colon though it is not always listed as a symptom of CTDs in their description. We have used milk of mag too as well as parachoc which is just parrafin and choc syrup. We are trying to come off the medication at the moment but it is hard to manage and not a simple problem. Another option is to try Amitiza – a new rx that helps with constipation. Even though we add fiber therapy to their diet and encourage fiber rich foods, they still sometimes have problems with constipation.
