ann,

I can't help you with the child care issue since I am in San

. I can pass on to you that I took a year of FMLA to help my

son. I waited about 8 months after diagnosis, had our doctor fill

out the leave slip and then packed up my personal items and left the

school district I was working for. After a good year off helping my

son, I was able to return to the same district but chose a different

position that was more flexible with hours.

This leave was unpaid and could have been taken for less than a

year. This is the same act my husband and I used after each child

was born but that was for only a month of leave.

My understanding is that they do not have to hold your position but

they do need to have a similar one available if you return within the

leave time. Hopefully someone like Jeff Sell or another knowledgeable

person can clarify this for you. I was just hoping to ease some of

your concern. This is a big transition for all of you. I wish you

the best of luck, Theresa in SA

> 1) Does anyone know of any child care in the Texas City, TX area?

2) Christian's mother called us at 3:30am last night stating that if

we wanted him, we could have him, if not, she was going to put him in

an institution b/c she just couldn't handle this anymore. Christian's

father and I do not have child care and wanted to know if FMLA

(family medical leave act) would cover his father to leave work to

take care of him, in order to find out our options.

ann,

Is Christian registered as a client with MHMR? MHMR is a statewide agency

with county offices. Because of the budget crunch, you may not get much

services right now. But they may can refer you to other service resources

local to your area. Here is a link to the state website:

http://www.mhmr.state.tx.us/ <http://www.mhmr.state.tx.us/>

Call them and ask for a local office and how to get registered. Once you

are registered with them, a caseworker will be assigned to you (Christian)

and you can call this person to get knowledgeable (hopefully) help about

services in your area.

Also, depending on your income, investigate the possibility of SS benefits

for Christian.

Also, RIGHT NOW, call about the CLASS list, it is a very helpful state

program capable of providing assistance to faimilies, but unfortunately

there is a 5 year waiting list. Get his name on the list NOW so that in 5

years he can reap the results. Also, ASK for a receipt showing his date

placed on this list and save this to prove he was added to avoid

administrative foul ups. Ask your MHMR caseworker how to get on this list

which is kept by an agency in Austin.

Also, document in writing with MHMR, don't assume they are telling you about

all programs available, ASK. Ask about Respite (which could be used to pay

some day care expenses).

I sympathize with you all.

1) Does anyone know of any child care in the Texas City, TX area?

(north of Galveston and south of Houston)

2) Christian's mother called us at 3:30am last night stating that if

3) Christian's father already called TCISD and they do not have any

type of Summer program. We've called the Tullis Farm School for

autistic kids; however, they are closed for the summer and are booked

up for the next two years for their regular calendar school year.

Christian's father and I fought for joint custody and it was granted

October of 2002. Now that we have visitation rights, Christian is

throwing major tantrums and having behavioral problems when we bring

him back home. This only started when his mother came back from

Austin TX, she was gone for 3 months, this is a yearly occurance.

When Christian's mother was in Austin, Christian's grandmother did

not tell us of any major tantrums like this and his school had no

major complaints. At 4am last night, his father told his mother that

obviously something is bothering Christian at their home and she

needs to figure out what it is and change it. We had Christian this

weekend and he was fine, no major problems, no tantrums (besides what

any other child would do). I hope this makes sense, lack of sleep is

creeping up on me.

Italian is one of the hardest restaurants to eat clean. Any portion

of spaghetti on the menu is going to be too much so whatever they

give you try to eyeball an authorized portion. Spag and marinara

sauce will be fairly safe but then you have to find a protein. Will

there be any kind of spaghetti or linguini dish with shrimp that is

not a cream and butter based sauce? That would be a good alternative.

Also some sort of veal in a non cream sauce would work. Make sure to

ask for a " to go " box for the leftovers or share with someone else.

Have a large salad too and dip the tines of your fork in the dressing

instead of letting them dump it on the salad. Hope this helps.

Have you tried giving him a cup of coffee? I know Caffiene can make our kids

crazy, but this always helps me son move his bowels and he gets constipated

all the time too. Another thing I will do is buy a low carb sugar free candy bar

for him, the sugar alchahols have a laxative effect.

My husband gives Charlie a doubleshot from starbucks, it is very sweet strong

cold coffee and it works great for constipation.

My son is not on any prescriptions so I dont know if this will help you or if

you are already giving him probiotics but that is what my son's

ped/geneticist said to give. Within an hour my son was able to go potty and was

no longer

gripping the edge of the table and standing on his toes then dropping to his

knees and twisting his body to the left than to the right (before the

probiotics, he'd do this several times because it was too painful, he'd quit

trying

then he'd try again and quit and try again).

Yes, magnesium has also helped my son. The mg brings moisture to the stool

so it can be passed.

After my daughter was on medications she went through the same problem. I did

not like the medications they gave her to help her constipation so I did what my

dear old grandmother told me to do and it worked. I snuck in 1/4 to 1/2

teaspoon of sweet oil in my daughter's chocoate milk since she drinks it all day

long. I did this right before she went to bed and she had soft stool the next

day. I did not have to do this every day but I did this every time she started

getting constipated again. After she was prescribed Paxil, the constipation

problems went away since one of the side effects for Paxil was diarrhea.

However, for my daughter she never has had that but it has softened her stool

and made her very regular (thank God!).

Good Luck,

CL

You may try old fashion mineral oil. I used to give that to my SI

younger daughter. She was constipated not from meds but from

refusing to go and would interpret BM as very painful however they

looked normal.

It did not matter how much fruit, veggies we gave her, she would

continue to hold the BM for days and miserable. It is only recently

she can go to the bathroom on her own.

Mineral oil helped us at least to initiate a BM pattern w/her but it

took alot of praise and coaching. Lots of ASD kids have SI issues

that may effect toileting- plus constipating meds only add to the

problem. I only learned that recently after attending a conference

and after months of struggling.

Cod liver oil may be option too w/ benefit of extra vit A but you may

want to get that at a HFS.

Good luck

I did not read all the replies to this yet... so this has probably

already been said... Seroquel requires the taker to consume a whole

lot of fluids... Tons of water and clear liquids... Also it

effects the bodies ability to maintain body temp and can induce a

lot of sweating... Children on Seroquel should not be outside

during the summer much unless they have tons of water... they will

dehydrate very easily and overheat very quickly... you can also get

fiber powder and put it in anything and everything you can... extra

fiber should be harmless... I would not use laxatives unless it is

the last resort... use supositories (sorry I cant spell) first if

at all possible... if you get fleet for babies it is usually mild

enough not to cause any complications and is not adictive... also

tons of water!!!!! I hope it gets better for you...

Oh and another thing... for some strange reason my son can not have

soy or whole milk... for some reason the soy with just stop him

right up and so will whole milk... he does best on rice milk or

skim milk...

*hugs*

some vaccinations work through t-cell function. The HiB vaccination comes to

mind. So doctors look at the response to

this to see how the t-cells grow. Other t-cell indicators are the CD4 and CD8

counts and his white blood cell count.

Our daughter didn't respond to the Hib and when they gave it again she did.

IVIG does not treat t-cell problems because

it carries antibodies and b-cells are what produce the antibodies. T-cells come

from bone marrow and the thymus.

His cd 4 and cd 8 were very low they said, and his wbc were low also i believe.

So when they respond one time and dont respond the next what do you do?> does

that meant that they dont have it or what? all this up and down stuff is

frusterating...

thank you, brandee
