Guest guest
Hi Harry, I don't have great eal of information but I hope the following willbe useful. The idea of defibrillation started around 1888 when Mac, a clinician, noted that ventricular fibrillation might be the cause of sudden death. It was 1899 when Prevost and Batelli stumbled on the concept of electrical defibrillation on animals. Many scientists in the early nineteenth century studied and experimented with the idea of how to reduce tachyarrythmias using electrical defibrillation. It was in 1947 Claude Beck, a surgeon in Cleveland (USA) first defibrillated a human heart. He had tried six other patients and was not successful, but on the 7th attempt the patient survived. In 1954 Kouwenhoven and Milnor defibrillated a dog through a closed chest with a capacitor-discharged defibrillator. Zoll,a cardiologist, worked on human hearts instead of animals. He worked with Kouwenhoven's ideas, and Zolls result led to the first external defibrillation of the human heart. Hope this helps.
