Guest guest
Govt considering law against discrimination of HIV/AIDS victims: [india News]: New Delhi, Dec 16 : Government is considering bringing in a legislation against discrimination of persons suffering from HIV/AIDS,Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said today. Such a law was necessary as children in schools, persons at work and patients in hospitals faced discrimination because of their HIV/AIDS status, he said at a National Public Hearing on 'Right to Healthcare' organised by National Human Rights Commission and Jan Swasthya Abhiyan here. Ramadoss regretted that despite the large infrastructure existing in the country in terms of human resources and physical infrastructure, nearly 90 per cent of the population had no access to good healthcare, according to an NHRC elease. To address this problem, the Governemnt was trying to review the system and incorporate accountability at all levels, he said. NHRC Chairperson Justice A S Anand lamented that despite having the largest force of technical persons in the world, the country lagged behind when it came to eradication of poverty and providing healthcare and education. Though Indians had excelled in the medical field across the world, " yet we have the most appalling healthcare facilities existing for our own countrymen. This is a common lament citizens of this country share. There is something fundamentally wrong with our national priorities, " he said. He hoped the Health Ministry would adopt a human rights based approach to strengthen public health infrasructure to realise the right to healthcare for everyone.
