Guest guest
Welcome Marge: I attended a presentation on SAFOs (Silicone Ankle Foot Orthotic) by Dorset Orthopaedic in Guelph, Ontario (Canada) on May 10, 2004. The presenter was Askew from Dorset. This was coordinated by CMT World (www.cmtworld.org) I found the presentation very informative, and I was truly impressed by SAFOs. We were able to try a pair on for some time, including walking outside and around the hotel. I do not have any experience with AFOs, but the SAFO was so lightweight I hardly knew I was wearing them. I think that most of the benefits derived by SAFOs as presented are indeed true. Some of the benefits included: * allows normal foot/ankle action * normal alignment of ankle at mid-stance. * increase stride length * prevents induction of premature knee flexion compared to normal AFO * easy to fit, clean and maintain * can be worn showering/swimming. * on and on. What I liked most of all was the improved balance and I knew where my feet were. It had been a long time since I really knew where my feet were. It may sound silly but think about it. At this time SAFOs are only available thru Certified Orthotist. You can find out more at www.dorset-ortho.com I hope this is of help to you.
