Guest guest
, I did wear metal braces until age 9. I would consider trying them again, but now I need support at my left ankle to keep it from rolling outward. How would they handle that problem...with heavy padding inside the left upright? How does the cost compare to the polyprolene AFOs? Ruth
Guest guest
Ruth, They would handle your ankle rolling with T straps. They are attached to your shoes and go around the ankle and the upright to keep your ankle from rolling. I have them and they work great. You probably had them when you wore metal braces as a kid. They were very common on kids braces. The cost should be the same as plastic braces even though they are a little easier to fabricate. Where I live, Memphis, there definitely seems to be a trend back to metal braces due to some good orthotists. My orthotist is one and he told me he was noticing a trend to metal braces for every age group except maybe small kids. Even teenagers are getting them. It's a matter of trying them and then you are sold. It definitely is easier to get shoes to work with them than plastic braces. I've never been able to get shoes to work with plastic braces other than tennis shoes or hiking boots. Dress shoes don't work unless you get them so big they look like clown shoes.
