Guest guest
Hi all... First a brief update on the filming: We're still down here! What originally was a week and half 'job' has turned into an almost 4 week gig. That's a good thing, but it's really tiring and not as glamorous as a lot of people think. A lot of the time we're rushed to get ready and then we sit for literally hours and hours without doing anything. On the positive side, we've met some wonderful people and are having a blast! Currently it's looking like this coming Tuesday is our last day, unless they convince us to stay longer again. Having met a lot of disabled individuals these past few weeks has been a huge eye opener for me and it's been an extremely positive experience. I'm learning to let go of some of the hang ups that I've had since I was a child, and everyone has treated me with respect. I think I was always afraid that people would shun me or talk about me behind me back or look at me with pity after exposing myself to them in a swim suit and them learning about CMT, but that's been far from the reality of the situation. It's been like a weight has lifted from my shoulders and it's one less thing to worry about. I'm not feeling self-conscious taking my braces off around everyone or wearing a dress or even being in the pool in a bathingsuit. Another thing I have come to realize is that I need a scooter of some sort to help me get around at times. Someone down here mentioned that Georgia has a rehabilitation program to help fund things that a disabled individual might need to continue to work. Does anyone know if Michigan has a similar program or if financial help is available federally? I think Medicare covers scooter costs only if you need it inside your home, but is that correct? I'm walking on uneven ground on location at this old house in Madison, GA and it's horribly difficult. If Geoff weren't with me there'd be no way I could navigate it. I have to depend on him to hold my hand when I walk everywhere I go and that's been difficult if he's off filming a scene or somewhere else. A manual wheelchair isn't too much of an option for me with limited hand strength and rough terrain. Can someone lead me in the right direction here? I am assuming a decent scooter will run in the thousands of dollars and that's just not financially a possibility, and yet if I want to be self- sufficient I know it's something that I desperately need.
