Guest guest
Hi, Gail and welcome..... I too come from a family with CMT back generations. Back then it was undiagnosed - but from the stories I heard my great-grandfather, tho he lived to be 90, gradually lost the use of his legs and spent many years unable to walk at all. My grandfather died at 70 but he too used a cane and had an unusual gait. Then my dad got the same symptoms - numbness in feet and all the other symptoms of CMT but he was diagnosed with PN and they did not know the cause. I don't think they did genetic testing back in the 50s. Anyway, about 10 years ago at age 60 - - after being clumsy all my life - I noticed myself getting even more clumsy - and then I started falling a lot. My feet were numb and felt like tight tight bandages on them all the time. I too was diagnosed with PN at the time, no known cause. But then this year my daughter (47)developed the same thing - so they used genetic testing and CMT1B was the diagnosis. The Dr. said if she had it and it being genetic and all and I had the same symptoms and her father did not then I definitely had CMT1B also and probably that was what my father had etc. And so now my doctor knows what is wrong with me (Hooray). Incidentally, the family name that this CMT runs in is Boyer - does anyone else out there have any Boyers in their line???? Enough about me. Let us hear from you. You will enjoy and learn so much here. June in PA
