I know what you mean about thinking AFOs could prevent an injury. Last February I broke my foot while wearing my AFOs. I fell and my foot happened to turn the wrong way inside the brace and snapped a bone by my ankle. I don't know if your partial cast can be taken off and on, but I have had great success with Arnica cream - most healthy food stores and it's fantastic in helping heal swelling, sprains, bruises, and other injuries. I found it even helped when I burned my finger the other day trying to reach my soup in the microwave from my wheelchair. :-) Are you able to use crutches at all?
