I had gotten a Cryo-Cuff after both surgerys on both knees and wore them for

some time on both knees even after most of the stiffness was gone. They

were even good as weight on my legs for strength while actually giving some

support at the same time. I got a pump with the second Cryo-Cuff, but

didn't have good luck with mine. It kept waking me up when it recharged,

then quit working altogether, so I sent it back. I slept better after the

surgerys than before, but woke up whenever the water turned warm. The

doctor who did the AIRs on my knees hadn't heard of a Cryo-Cuff, but he let

me bring them in the recovery room. I wouldn't have let him do surgery

without them ;).

A lot of times bruising will show up when swelling goes down, but you might

ask your doctor, especially if it is starting to hurt more or is hot to the

touch.

One question: is this the same as arthoscopy? I'm new to this

still ...

Thanks,

Hey !

No this is actual - cut-you-open-stem-to-stern knee surgery!

Arthroscopy is when they use equipment that can go into 3 little

holes - this is when they are doing stuff that can be

done " contained " , like cartilage repair or a lateral release of your

tendon.

I had the back of my patella (kneecap) and end of my fibia replaced

with titanium parts (it's considered a 1/3 knee replacement). This

was because I did not respond to other treatments and I'm only 42.

This way I have bone left for a total knee replacement later.

Don't mean to scare you because you're new - but don't worry I have

truly done every other treatment (including arthroscopy) before I

got to this point.

Hope you're doing well...I had a good day with my PT. I actually

got to 90 deg range of motion - a HUGE change from Friday. Here's

hoping I keep going - and the pain goes away really soon!! (3

cheers for Vicodin!).

Hugs & blessings,

Kim

,

I could walk around after 9 days after lateral release, but I had to use a

cane (sometimes crutches) and it was not very graceful. The knee was very

sore at that point. My worse problem was at night. When I would fall

asleep, I would quit moving my knee and would wake up after a few hours in

severe pain.

Hang in there. I would move as much as possible. Follow the OS

instructions to a T.

Hope you feel better soon.

I forgot one thing . Ice, Ice, Ice. Hopefully you got a cryocuff so

that you can keep the knee cool.

Hang in there. It will get better.

I had the same reaction. Took a long time before it stopped hurting, and I was

afraid to do much with my knees for a year (just me). About 10 days after the

operation I went out for an experimental walk an fell off the curb (just

stupidity), landing on the foot of the leg where I'd had the lateral release.

OWWWW!!!! But no permanent harm.

That's about right on the recovery scale...I was 2 weeks before I was

up on my leg for any time and was on crutches until at least 6 weeks

after. Hang in there - and use ice, ice, ice...it will keep the pain

away. Oh and stay on the pain meds too.

I started physiotherapy about 2 weeks after surgery..but right now you

should be resting and icing.

Hang in there!

Ouch!

Thanks for the explanation. I've pretty much done the physio (5 months),

the resting (way too long, since September) and I think I'm looking at

arthoscopy.

I'm (only) 47 and I think I'm young to have these problems ... Can I ask

how long you've had this problem?

It sounds like you annd I have about the same type of history. I

started PT and I was at it 3 times a week for about 2-1/2 months and

I ended up having a lateral release (release of the tendon to re-

centre the kneecap) and a cartilage repair.

I did PT again for another 3 months and at that point I decided that

I had pretty much recovered from the surgery and any residual pain

was just the CP. I did Supartz shots last summer - no luck - no

relief.

I then opted for the resurfacing. I'm not able to take the usual

drugs (allergic) and accupuncture would cost the same as doing PT ...

I'm 42 (young too!) and all this started about October, 2004. I've

always been clumsy and fell a lot on my knees when I was younger but

no actual injury I could point to as a cause.

Keep with it - and make sure you trust your OS. If you've done 6

months of PT and you aren't getting relief there are other things

you can try. Make sure what he wants to do with the arthroscopy

(lateral/miniscus (cartilage), etc.)...read lots and search the web

often (the sites change frequently). I had the wonderful benefit of

a friend who is a rehab nurse for knees and hips!!

Good luck and please feel free to ask of site if you want

(knadn_eh@...)...this board is a great source of info too.

Kim -- what did your OS do in the resurfacing? Did it work?

Oops! I see you answered my question about what they did in this post, which I

hadn't gotten to (sometimes I go through my e-mail backwards).

I'm confused about your " fibia " statement. Since the patella rides in the

trochlear groove of the femur, and doesn't touch the tibia (I assume that's what

you meant), I don't understand why they replaced part of the tibia. And since

that's where the menisci live (top of tibia), it seems like a very radical

replacement. You didn't mean femur, did you? If you did, did you find out how

far back into the bone they cut?

Thanks.

Ann;

You caught me - too much Vicodine & I shouldn't be on the computer!

It was the femur he resurfaced...and I'll have to ask how far he

cut...that's probably something I should know!

Thanks. I'm very interested in getting this done. Where is your OS located?

I'm willing to travel, although there may be OS's in my area (Seattle) who'll do

just a patella/femur resurfacing. OTOH, I had to have part of one of my menisci

removed on that knee, so I may be in for a TKR. Sigh.

Thanks again. Enjoy that vicodin (but eat LOTS of fiber).

Ann:

My doc's website is www.spbj.net. My guy is Dr. Albus. He is awesome!

Apparently there are only a few docs that do this...but I would ask

your OS if he does it or knows someone who does.

Good luck! Oh and, btw, my brother's best friend had a total knee

done the same day as I did because he's in Canada and this isn't

readily available there yet, I guess.

Kim,

thanks a lot!

I went to my Doc today and began PT(3 times/week for 1 month). I read

something from website and they suggest patella passive massage everyday after

surgery. did you do it at that time? so how long time the swallon can disappear?

I have a lot of bruise in my leg, is it right?

Ann,

Thanks a lot!

I'm scared to walk now, but my Doc told me more walk will decrease swollen. I

will be very careful!

As much as it hurt I did " move " my patella (kneecap) around as much as

possible. It wasn't fun - but it did help! Also - stick with the

PT...especially when it hurts. I am doing home PT right now and even

though I've only had a few visits I have made progress. Painful -

yes - helpful - definitely.

The bruising is perfectly normal. Once the bruises start going

green/yellow you are healing - whoopee! I also found that applying

cold (thanks for all who replied on that) brings out the bruises.

I hope that you start having good days soon!
