Guest guest
nne, I had a lateral release about 8 months ago. Like you I was doing well until I pushed too hard. My advice is to not do anything that hurts inside the joint and to take it slow. I do not know if it is a ersult of my being too aggressive, lack of PT or what, but I am looking at a Carticel implant and/or a TTT in the next 3 months.. Take it slow. No jogging, stepping up a step, squating, until you get good strength inyour quads. If you do an exercise and it hurts, back off a bit and try it again in a few days to a week. Good luck Don On 7/2/06, MJD <grgoofus@...> wrote: > > Ann, > > I noticed that you mentioned that you've had a lateral > release. I had one done about 10 weeks ago now. Guest guest
Hi Don, About your Carticel and/or TTT........ do you have a sizeable area that will need the implant? And, what area is your " defect " (Kinda hate to use that word, but that's what my OS called it....cartilage defect...nice,eh?) Thanks for the advice, I have been known to overdo things.. It just amazes me that at the end of last March I was still doing dog agility where I had to run/jog start/stop with my dogs, then had the LR and I seem to have little muscle strength in that knee. Where the heck did that go??? nne Re: Ann - Lateral Release nne, I had a lateral release about 8 months ago. Like you I was doing well until I pushed too hard. Guest guest
TO tell you the truth, I don't know the exact size of the defect. It is in the Trochlea groove. My OS will do a scope ina few weeks to make sure I am a good Carticel candidate and we will go from there. Did you hae an injury that cuase you to have the surery? I had a painful catch in my knee and was on crutches or a cane for a few weeks before I was operated on. I went to surgery for a torn minescus and woke up with a Plica resection and a lateral release. I think if I had only had the plica cleaned up, I might have been okay. My theory is that the lateral release cause the knee to grind on an area of cartilage that was not having a lot of pressure put on it before the lateral release. At any rate, you situation boils down to strengthening at this point. Keep you chin up. What exercises hurt you? Do you hurt in day to day activity? Guest guest
Don, I had an initial injury, where I fell on my knee years ago. Created a " defect " on my medial femoral condyle. That was " fixed " with a microfracture procedure and appears to be doing ok. The rehab from that surgery was not done well by my PT (I didn't know any better at first) and I ended up with quite a bit of scarring in/around my patellar tendon, which I now believe cause my patella to ride badly on my trochlear groove. Had a scope done 10 weeks ago to really check things out and found that the trochlear groove was basically decimated (grade 4). He performed a lateral release to release the patella and have it ride, well, differently. My everyday walking is not a big problem, although I feel every step I take. I'm doing a lot of strengthening exercises, and was doing quite well, when I asked my PT if I could be cleared to start back in dog agility. He did a few exercise tests, ladder work, and it showed that I was in no way ready for any type of sport. SInce that PT appointment (last monday) I've been fighting muscle inflammation as well as some pretty intense bone pain. I'm hoping it's just a flare up and will settle, but it's discouraging to say the least. This coming wednesday I go for my 10 week checkup with my OS and he's going to suggest I do a set of visco supplementation shots (Supartz). I'm not sure what to think about that, at this point. Will it settle things down so I can strengthen without these setbacks, or is it a waste if your muscles aren't up to speed yet? Good luck and do keep us updated. I know my local OS will not be offering me anything else, so, I may be looking for other options a ways down the road. I'm too young, they say, for a TKR or even a PKR....but, darn it, I don't want to have to measure every step I take for the rest of my life! nne Re: Ann - Lateral > Release > > nne, > > I had a lateral release about 8 months ago. Guest guest
Yeah, I thought, since the surgeon was just going to go through my knee & make a slice in the membrane on the lateral side, then slide out all the instruments, I wouldn't have any pain at all, but I was so crippled the first week I had to rent a wheelchair. Then it took weeks before I could walk with confidence, then months, and then finally I tried jogging across the street, and I didn't fall down and my knee didn't hurt, so I tried a little more jogging, and finally I was jogging around the blocks for lunch (and got rid of the 30 lb I'd gained). So my answer is months, but a lot of that could have been psychological. I thought cutting out part of my meniscus would hurt, but the first one (right knee) didn't hurt at all! The one I had done 9 days ago did, but got better fast, although I still have pain at night if I walk too much. " Too much " was, yesterday, walking around downtown for a few blocks and then shopping for a long time going up & down aisles. It didn't hurt till I got home, though. And now I've gone & fallen off a ladder. More about that later. Ann Ann Ann - Lateral Release Ann, I noticed that you mentioned that you've had a lateral release. I had one done about 10 weeks ago now. How long did it take you to rehab from it? I've been doing well, until I tried a bit more aggressive exercises, then it felt like I was back at square one. The surgery didn't seem that aggressive, yet it's taking awhile to recoup from it. Thanks for any info.... marianne -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Sometimes when they do a LR they cut some part of the vastus lateralis. I didn't know this when I had mine done, but the muscle there has remained concave. I found out later that " some surgeons " cut part of the VL. WHY???? If some don't, then it must not be necessary, no? And if they cut it, then you must lose some strength, yes? And nobody who's ever been athletic wants a concave VL. Also I didn't get chondromalacia until after the LR, and I suspect that scar tissue from either the cutting of the VL or where he stuck one of the instruments through my muscle is what's pulling my kneecap laterally. It's very clear when I stretch my quads that it's very tight there, compared to the other knee. Ann Ann Re: Ann - Lateral Release nne, I had a lateral release about 8 months ago.
