Spencer wanted to play guitar to have fun not to impress people and probably

without a thought of playing with the symphony. I would encourage him to have

fun..of course this is easier said than done when you are a teen and someone

puts negative thoughts in your mind.

If he can find a good teacher ...a really good teacher who is also

understanding, I'll bet they could find a way for him to play in spite of CMT

hands. Also a therapist would know of equipment/aids that might help his hands

play the way they need to.If these things don't help...try talking to the band

director at the high school..maybe they would help Spencer before or after

school ????

And I know it's hard to ignore the boy who was so unkind but maybe he's jealous

and wishes he had a mom who loves him enough to buy him something special.

Good luck Spencer. Take this as a challenge and show them what you can do.Don't

let anyone tell you what you can't do.Besides how does that boy know anything?

He isn't a doctor is he?

Hello,

Our 15 yr old son wanted one for Christmas, I spoke to his neurologist and he

said it certainly wouldnt hurt his CMT it may even help with his fine motor

skills. So we did get him one and he is thrilled. He is waiting for his lessons

to start. Good luck

I started playing the guitar when I was 13. I learned to play by ear and

later with music. I was a folk singer and i loved entertaining on stage.

People

always were nice to me. then my hands started having problems. since I have

no feelings in my fingers I never know if I am pushing the string down to make

a chord or not. It was embarrassing to have the problems while entertaining

others. Thank God I was blessed with a sense of humor. I created a character

known as Ramblinrose. I dress funny and black out my two front teeth and I

learned a lot of humorous songs and jokes. Now I boldly go on stage and no one

notices the missed chords. A positive attitude has helped me a lot. you

should never listen to other people just believe in yourself, I sure believe in

you and I know that you will learn the guitar. The more I practice the more I

am learning to feel the chord in my hands not my fingers. Saturday night I am

going to be serious and do some country songs at a local music hall. If I can

keep learning new ways to feel my strings and play my guitar at age 51 I am

very sure Spencer can learn too. Keep smiling and remember that kid is really

jealous because you are developing you talents and he doesn't have any. good

luck Cathleen in Arkansas

Yo ,

Some background: I've had CMT since I was a child. My dad put a $15 guitar in my

lap during one of my stints in a wheelchair during grammar school. I learned to

play and got good enough to play lead guitar in a high school rock group (though

we were VERY bad, we had a VERY good time). I am now 43 and, thanks to CMT, have

lost the ability to play the six-stringed guitar, but I still play the bass in

my church's worship team. Which is very satifsfying.

So encourage your son to try. It may be that his hand strength is too weak to

play, but don't let that stop him from trying. If the six-string doesn't work.

Suggest that he try the bass.

And sorry to say it, he's going to have to get used to looking weird. But he can

do that too.

A last thought: finding a good teacher is key.

Wishing Spencer Well,

Cathleen,

It will be such a great if we can have recording of your music and also of

's. Can you create music file and upload it on the site? I gave up musical

instrument pretty early in life.

I too taught myself to play guitar when I was 18 and have been

playing for 9 years now. I find that it actually helps maintain the

dexterity in my hands. I am in the Santa area too... and

MCCABES IS GREAT!!! The teachers there are really good. STRUM

AWAY!!!

Speaking of Santa ... Gretchen... can you recommend any good

doctors for CMT? I was diagnosed back in the early 90's and I am

pretty sure they hadn't developed the blood test diagnosis for what

type of CMT you have by then. I haven't been to a doctor for CMT

since, and I would like to go back in for an accurate diagnosis. I

have only been in Santa for about 3 years so I am a little

lost when it comes to finding a good doctor knowledgeable about CMT.

Any suggestions!!
