Guest guest
Greetings: Although I am the one that said a 50/50 chance of passing on CMT could mean ALL ones kids COULD have it (probability theory), I NEVER said that does not mean one shouldn't have kids, just to be cognizant about it... In past discussions I've always weighed in on the side of having kids (I'm glad to be here), but got the idea that others felt I may not be aware of what I was saying when I said that in terms of risk. All I was saying was that I am aware (not just assuming that if I have kids they'd be in the percentage w/o CMT) and it's important, whatever choice we do make, that we know the risks involved. I have been a member of for several years and this discussion has come up SEVERAL times. In many posts in the past I have been one to say, and STILL say, I am glad I was born and I would not forego children JUST because of CMT. I also don't have kids now, but have not ruled it out. In fact, I'm leaning more toward having children than not having them, but I am getting on the older side for kids (almost 35), and may end out opting out not just because of CMT but because of age, CMT and a variety of factors. I am both excited for every expectant parent with CMT and respectful of those who do not choose to have children. Please, please, I just ask that folks read what is written in posts and not assume more than what is actually said. Saying we should know the risks is NOT saying not to have children or not to take that risk and is DEFINITELY not critiquing those who do. Peace, Marti
Guest guest
its a 50 50 chance sweetie..my parents were both dwarfs and im not..so its very hard to tell aleonard_85 <aleonard_85@...> wrote: Not that I'm planning on having children any time soon but I have SED (and 4'1 " ), my mother was an LP but my father was short statured due to polio...and hypothetically, if I were to get pregnant with somebody who was 6'1 " what are the chances of me having an LP or AP child? ===
Guest guest
I think it's a pretty random thing. I'm not sure what the exact stats are but there is NO ONE in my family who is an LP and it doesn't run in my family's past generations yet I was born with chondrodysplasia punctata -an extremely rare form of dwarfism. When I was born my family was told that only 50 people in the entire US has it. I'm only 20 but I would really like to know your guys views on lp's having babies. I don't know what I am gonna do when that time comes. 1. I cant physically carry a baby 2. I dunno if the baby would be an lp 3. im afraid of feeling guilty if the baby did inherit dwarfism from me 4. I don't know if I could handle going through everything with an lp baby just bc I know how they must be feeling going into surgery etc. Re: having kids its a 50 50 chance sweetie..my parents were both dwarfs and im not..so its very hard to tell aleonard_85 <aleonard_85@...<mailto:aleonard_85@...>> wrote: Not that I'm planning on having children any time soon but I have SED (and 4'1 " ), my mother was an LP but my father was short statured due to polio...and hypothetically, if I were to get pregnant with somebody who was 6'1 " what are the chances of me having an LP or AP child? ===
Guest guest
well i know the chances of two dwarfs mating and having an AP are very slim but if i were to date an lp the chances of me having an lp would be 50/50 seeing as how both my parents were lps its very hard to tell i think. Guest guest
well explain to me why im average and my parents are dwarfs? wich they are also pseudos Bill Bradford <tslug1@...> wrote: Hi all, ka Peasely (or is it Oakenfus now?) would be a good one to ask about genetics. Guest guest
Because pseudo-achondroplasia is a dominant gene, which means each of your parents have one gene for pseudo and one for tallness. You apparently got both genes for tallness (one from each parent) and none for pseudo. In dominant forms of dwarfisms, if two types of the same dwarfs have kids, there is a 25% chance they will be tall, 50% chance they will be short, and a 25% chance they will get double dominance (which is usually fatal). I hope this helps. Guest guest
I have a question. I have Chondrodysplasia Punctata. It used to be known as Conradi's. My parents were told that it has a dominant recessive gene. Is that even possible? I always learned in science that it was one or the other. So does that mean that both of my parents had to have the gene and that since they did it overtook any " tall " gene they had? Its just weird because I'm the only lp in my entire family, on both sides.
