I was in a car accident on Jan1, 2000..rearended my car....anyway ,I needed

massage therapy afterward......My RD said to be careful and make sure they

didnt massage too hard........It was the best thing for my FM and RA....for

years I had been saying that it felt like I was sitting on bare bones when I

sat (and I am overweight ..so I am not skinny...)and I went to an orthopedic

dr who had massage therapists on his staff....one day this lil bit of a girl

got up on top of me (while I was lying face down on table) and pushed down on

my buttocks with her knees...very slowly....it was the best I ever

felt...they did such marvelous things for my back and lower back...and my

insurance doesnt cover it now......Oh, I feel so good just thinking about

a nice massage............so if you can get a massage ..I highly recommend

it...and a registered licensed therapist knows how to do it right so as not

to hurt us.........Judy in AZ

Hey Judy,

I am interested in massage but I have been afraid to do it. I remember

once a told she went for a message. I think it was on a cruise and she

was in a lot of pain. I am going to ask the Rheumy. I am also thinking

about Yogi however I don't know how I would get in those positions. I

would like to cut back on some of drug since no one convinces me that drugs

did not play a part in all this stomach thing. I have a neighbor who goes

for messages and she says the person she goes to it good. I would want to

know if they are licensed and know how to deal with RA.

I'm glad you sent the note in.

Lynn,

Although I had a bad experience on the cruise ship, I

wouldn't hesitate to go to someone that is trained to deal

with people that have fibromyalgia. Looking back it was the

FM that flared from the massage. At the time I didn't know

I had FM, nor did I know a lot about it. I know there are

people that are trained to deal with musculoskeletal

disorders, but finding them may be a challenge. I think a

PT is qualified, or know someone that is. I hope you don't

let my experience scare you from trying it. We're all

different, and what hurts me may not hurt someone else. And

remember, I have FM.

June,

It was a deep massage that caused me so much pain too. I

should have opened my mouth when it was hurting me, but

never having a massage, I thought it was supposed to hurt.

Hi Lynn, you should ask the therapist if they have had

experience with

RA patients. The girl I go to uses a light massage. Just

once she tried

to go deeper and I hurt for a week after. I try to go

every two or three

weeks just for my back and neck and while it doesn't help

for a long

period of time, it feels wonderful and loosens tight

muscles and gives

you a sense of well being.

Hugs

Lynn,

When I went I asked my RD for a recomendation for a pain clinic. Most pain

clinic (in this area anyway) have massage therapy. The guy I went to was good.

I went for about 2 months or so, three times a week. It felt good while he was

doing it, but within a couple of hours the pain would return. So we decieded

that I wouldn't continue since it wasn't doing me any good long term. He did

show me a couple of exercise's that I could do for my back and they do help.

Just make sure that whoever you go to is familiar in treating RA patients,

because they can't bend and twist us like they do most other patients. Good

luck. Tery - FL

Lynn, I found massage therapists working with Physical therapists and also

you can find some possibly by asking orthopedic drs. Here in Phx i acan look

in yellow pages and find probably 5 p[ages of the legal ones and a couple

pages of the ones who want to massage more than your muscles(LOL).

Good luck........I would love to be able to afford them again...went through

5 months of it after last car accident...lawyer sent me to an ortho dr who

was a DO not an MD and they had their own on staff......wonderful how it

makes you feel.......Judy in AZ

Lynn, try a chiropractor. Mine did not do the Massage Therapy, but he

said that some do. So maybe you can call some chiropractors and maybe

find a lead to either a Massage Therapist or a Chiro that does the

Massage. Make absolutely sure they are licensed. I was warned about

that. It did not help me. Just made me feel like they hit me all over

with a 2x4 by the next day.

You might try a chiropractor's office. They often work with physical

therapists (some that work out of their office) and they would know about the

insurance, as well. Good luck!!!

Thanks and hope you all have a painfree day,

Hi there,

Look here to find a massage therapist in your area.Welcome to the American Massage Therapy

Associa…

You can also call the local Massage Therapy Schools, they have well

supervised clinics that will cost you less money, how ever they are students

so if you go you need to be very specific about what you want. Most

students are very willing to listen to what you want, they usually are very

willing participants.

Good Luck.
