Guest guest
Carl, Strength training won't get us too far. Switch to resistance training. I don't use machines at all. Too artificial. I workout in an aquatic circuit - in the pool, against a 5 mile current sometimes, other times I don't use the current. Have done this several years and saw a difference in muscle mass after the first 3 months. I have also combined some of my Pilates routine in with the aquatics. If you feel tired after ANY exercise, STOP. Don't start again until you are thoroughly rested. And then start slow and pay close attention to your body. There is a point where I stop - before overworkness, and by stopping I can switch to something else - like if I was working on the steps for my legs, I stop and work on my arms, or do some work on my back. As for walking, I walk in the water too, about a mile or so - again, sometimes with the current, sometimes not. I not only walk forwards, but backwards. Backwards walking is good for my calf muscles. If you can get in a pool program, I recommend it. A whole new world and entire body conditioning. The water I am in is about 4 feet deep, so most of the time I am pretty immersed. Guest guest
Gretchen, Thanks a lot, that's very good advice. The fitness center where I work out has multiple pools....including walking pool with current resistence so will do that some more. I have tried it. Also there's a warm water pool...I am doing the forwards, backwards and sideways stepping some...and have a complete list of aquatic exercises from my physical therapist so will jump into that (so to speak) next week.
