Have any of you purchased and used SAFOs? (Silicone Ankle Foot Orthosis) If so,

what do you think?

Thanks,

Amy Hodge *** Amy, I haven't purchased or used SAFOs, but there is some very

current information in our FILES, under SAFOs, photos too. The study that Dorset

did only had 40% of CMT persons use them. More research is to come as well ~

Hi Jackie,

The SAFO may not give you enough support if your footdrop is severe. It is

successful for mild to moderate atrophy. Here is the website to learn more about

them:

_http://www.safo.eu.com/en/index.html_ (http://www.safo.eu.com/en/index.html)

They are very comfortable, but do not offer arch support the way AFOs do. I was

recently talking to a new Orthopedic Surgeon who said that he really likes a

brace called the Arizona Brace. He showed it to me online, but I would need to

google it to find more info on it. It might be another option to the Helios.

Hi,

I live in Rohnert Park. It is about 45 minutes north of San Francisco. You are

more than welcome to come see my SAFOs. You can E-mail me directly to connect.

_Ouirone@... I_ (mailto:Ouirone@... I) don't know of anyone

else in the area that has them.

The person who made my casts lived in Vacaville and services all of the Bay

Area.

I look forward to talking with you.

Hi Maureen,

I am interested in trying to cast my own SAFOs with some help from some friends

at a shop that does casting in silicone & other plastics.

1. Does anyone with SAFOs live within driving distance from San Francisco?

2. Could I drive to a public location in your area and look at these SAFOs? I

have calipers and would like to measure them.

3. Or, could I get a description of thickness - are they uniform in thickness -

or are they thicker in the heel etc.?

I understand the importance of casting to my foot and my particular posture

requirements, but would like to know more about how these are designed for

others.

I looked at the website and will look in the files as well.

Thanks,

Chris

Read the previous mail attached just thought I would add to the site

with my own experience. I thought this site was a good place to

discuss this.

Any positive experience is good for CMT moral

,

Thank you for your lovely message. I live in Scotland and traveled

down to the Dorset Clinic which is located in England. It was all done

in two visits. I have just returned from a weeks holiday and I was

able to get the full benefit of them as I was able to walk on a daily

basis and they were a joy while swimming. One of the things that I

have also gained is confidence in walking again I have had many

disastrous falls in the past where I have cracked ribs and hit my head

on poles ohhh yes they were sore !!!!

Warm wishes,

Sam,

Go to our Files and open the one on SAFOs. There is an article by Dr. Vinci and

also one from Biomechanics magazine. I remember telling me they helped her

go up the stairs. I also remember Paolo telling me they made his legs very hot

and would not be suitable for people in warm weather locations.

Product info and 4 videos at http://www.dorset-ortho.com/product-safo.php

You might want to contact Dorset before you go. I seem to recall that there is

some PT required after receiving SAFOs, so you may need to stay a bit longer.

For some reason, there hasn't been alot of talk about the SAFO in the US. I

don't know if it is a weather thing or a marketing thing or what.

Here's a direct link to past posts on the SAFOs

/msearch?query=SAFOs & charset=windows-1\

You may also want to contact at CMT UK for some info on people wearing

them there. http://www.cmt.org.uk/
