HIV/AIDS Patient Care & Research unit in Beleghata, Kolkata

Dear FORUM,

First HIV/AIDS patient care & Research unit for patients coming from North East

Region to be started soon in Beleghata Hospital for Infectious Diseases,

Kolkata.

A separate unit with 10 bed facility, intensive care unit and operation theatre

would be started soon in the 4th floor of Beleghata ID Hospital which is going

to cater necessary health care services to the AIDS patients coming from North

East states. In addition to the treatment offered to the patients the unit will

dedicate into research work towards medicine for the AIDS Patient. The unit is a

joint venture of National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases (NICED) & West

Bengal State Government. The patients would be kept in individual cubicles as

the doctors in charge of the unit said that other infections might get spread if

they are kept together.

The project in-charge and Director of NICED quoted that along with free food

and accommodation the unit will also offer different entertainment material like

TV & indoor games. To emphasise on " case management " the centre will initially

do the testing of CD4, CD8 counts and then refer appropriate cases for admission

in the hospital.
