Guest guest
I have to comment on this one about the stimulants as cannot take stimulants, has tried Ritalin and Adderall and both made her anxiety level sky rocket, she couldnt stand simple noise even someone breathing and she became way more impulsive and I had to really watch her with my other younger girls as I could not trust her judgment because of her impulsiveness. This was never an issue before the stimulants but I will say they helped her concentration and it was devestating to have to take her off because it really helped one thing but brought on a whole new set of serious problems. Now wer'e trying Imipramine but havnt seen any success yet. Nikki
Guest guest
! is having a terrible time concentrating, she says its like her mind is wondering like "what am I going to do after school, what about this, what about that etc etc" She cant concentrate on her school work and homework is a nightmare She had to miss recess to complete her math and so on and so on. Its just wandering mind and she also says her mind feels blank. She has forgotten her multiplcation tables etc. HELP. This is one of those days that I feel like I cant handle any of this. Im no longer dealing with one child like this its now 2 and I feel so inadequate I just want it to go away. (not reality though). Nikki in O'town Nikki, I sounded just like you yesterday. After dealing with 3 OCD kids and 1 OCD mom-in-law all day, not to mention 1 oblivious husband, I was ready to turn in my resignation from all family by last night. My son is also having incredible concentration problems. He brought home his first F paper yesterday and said it was because he forgot how to do borrowing in subtraction. He has always been a straight A student. While I think a few bad grades are no big deal,(I don't won't him to be perfect),I am concerned. He brought home another F today. He has also been diagnosed with ADHD but we haven't tried medicating that because his sister has ttm and docs usually recommend against stimulants when ttm is present in the family. I am also concerned that his present medication may be contributing to his lack of concentration. We start with a new therapist in 2 weeks who will start CBT with him. I'm hoping that maybe we can decrease his meds for rages as he gains more control through CBT and then address the ADHD. Hang in there, Nikki! As our therapist told me when I realized I had 3 kids with problems not just 1 or 2, at least you're better educated and equipped to deal with this now than when you started out with the 1st one. Hi , I never heard of this. I take ritalin for ADHD and my daughter has TTM so I think I would have come across this somewhere. I know you have to be cautious with stimulants when tics are present but even then it can be done. Are you sure about this contraindication? Guest guest
Nikki: Aiden has trouble periodically with his thoughts causing him to forget things he already knows. It's still OCD in my book and related to anxiety, even though they don't perceive it as such. That's why I include limits on homework in his IEP. I really don't think it's a medication response, but the best thing to do would be to bring it up to your prescribing physician. I'll let Kathy or respond to the meltdown issue. My first recommendation is to have an IEP meeting to determine what might be causing her stress at school and how it could be lessened, at least for a time. Guest guest
Hi Alan! I do not have that book although I have a small library of others. I am meeting with the school psychologist and teachers in a couple weeks and maybe will set up a 504 plan for her. We are going to wean off of all meds and see what we are actually dealing with as far as symptoms we do not even have a true baseline on her. She has been on some sort of med for the last 2 1/2 yrs and they are starting to have alot of weird side effects. Her body has always responded very weird to medications and I have to say its only getting worse. I feel this is the best thing to do right now. Thanks for the tip on the book. God bless! Have you tried discussing getting some accommodations from her teacher? I think that reducing the volume of homework could be a help. Guest guest
Hi Nikki, in O'Town, It is good to hear that has been able to overcome her ET fears! YOU did a great job! There are mixed feels about the elastic band snapping routine. The person with OCD is supposed to snap when they have the urge to follow through with a compulsion. I'm not comfortable with this technique, because it replaces the compulsion with another one, rather than putting a stop to it. It also hurts - yes that's the point - but it doesnt prevent the person from snapping away when they NEED to do it!! It does sound like is following those instructions when she hits herself. Personally, I would suggest that when wants to smack herself, instead she do some Bossing Back. Remind her to push the OCD Bully away... not to give in to the thoughts or the actions. Remember the exercise where there is a volume switch?? When hears the voices, remind her to work on turning down the volume. She can start by thinking/concentrating on what she is hearing, then imagine a huge button that adjusts the sounds. take care, hi to for me... wendy in canada _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
HI NIkki: Habit reversal, e.g. twanging the rubber band, is only effective for mental rituals not for obsessions. Often it can be tricky for kids to tell the difference. Perhaps Tiff can learn a more gentle way of redirecting herself if these thoughts are mental compulsions/rituals. If they are obsessions, then unfortunately as we all know negative consequences rarely stop obsessions. Good luck, take care, aloha, Kathy (H) kathyh@... P.S. She is talking all the time and keeping busy ALL the time, cant stand silence etc etc. She has started slapping herself in the cheek to stop the thought and I wanted your opinions on if this is a good idea or not. She says it helps but Im worried it will turn into a compulsion. Her therapist (not seeing right now) used to have her wear a rubber band on her wrist and snap it when she had a " thought " it became too painful for her and she stopped it but she created this on her own. So Glad everything turned out for you ) {{{ Precious Angel Hugs }}} Helen Hi Helen, nice to meet you I am glad to be back on-line and reading e-mail. We are doing well. is developing and growing so much! I don't know if I will be having another baby any time soon though - what an experience! It was hard. I am sure if you've had a baby, you will understand what I mean! When I was 32 weeks pregnant, I got sick with a gastro-intestinal virus...ugh it was nasty...and I had pneumonia which went away but in general, I didn't get better. The flu-ish symptoms passed though. I spent most of the rest of my pregnancy at the hospital but I was so tired and ill I didn't even care. I didn't expect to carry full term at one point, which was frightening but since I was already 32 weeks it wasn't so bad. But not only did I carry full term, I actually had to have my labor induced at 41 weeks! I guess was happy to be where she was. I was unhappy because contractions and cramping started while I was ill and never went away. But it was "false labor". When I was induced, I had a relatively easy labor. It only lasted 11 hours from the time my waters were broken until she was delivered. After about 2.5 hours pushing, some kind of maternal instinct told me I couldn't get her out on my own. The doctors decided I was right (duh!) so they used vaccuum extraction to get her out. She was nine pounds, five ounces and almost twenty two inches long. I am not petite, but I am not that big either! After she was delivered, everything seemed to be fine but then after a half an hour, my placenta still would not deliver. It was not detaching from my uterine wall so the doctors had to manually detach and remove it, which I am told is basically a surgical procedure, and my uterus began to rupture and I was hemorraging. I still don't really understand how they managed to stop this process ?? But it took almost two hours to get me stablized. My blood pressure was almost non-existent and I needed blood transfusions, which was frightening but what can you do, right? All this while we were scared I would have a seizure (I am epileptic) during delivery, and that issue never even arose! I did seize the night after she was born, but not during labor and delivery...which was nice. The toughest part was that I couldn't hold my baby for what seemed like forever after she was born. My husband and the nurse both brought her over to me to see her, but it wasn't the same. When I finally did get to hold her, I was so weak and frail. She spent the first night at the nursery because I couldn't care for her and that saddened me. My husband was wonderful. He stayed with us at the hospital the whole time we were there (eight days). Two weeks later, I had a urinary blockage and had to be re-admitted to the hospital and he stayed with us again! He is a real sweetheart. He is a wonderful daddy too. He is totally Mr. Mom! When he is around I rarely have to do diaper changes...he is exicited to do it, lol Anyway thanks for the opportunity to share about my experience. I haven't told many people about it... my family knows, and the people at church know because they were praying for us. But it's not a tale you tell to everyone. I know the people in this group understand such things and how devastating and stressful illness is.

I have had a harder time being dedicated this time to the eating, but the workouts have been great. My hubby hid the scale on me for 1 month, and that really got me motivated. I want to see some good results at the end of that month. I have 10 lbs to go. No I haven't posted pictures. Maybe at the end of this challenge. I am my worst critic. Guest guest
I am ok my friend. I had tried to slow a bit for a few weeks, still worked full time and taught the First Eucharist Class their songs in sign language but stayed off the internet, didn't go to my Board meetings and just tried to focus on making it on 11mg of pred. It didn't work...lol...but it is ok. I got my lab results back and at the time my sed rate was as my dear rhuemy put it " moderately highly elevated " { hate when they get technical like that!} so I felt better that it wasn't me being a wuss but my body saying..Nope, Nope not ready... I bumped back up to 15 , tried 13, didn't care for it. Had a nice high on 15 for a week but now I am leveling...I do love that pred rush! We are discussing mtx and I think I am going to go for it. I need to stop being such a poop. I still do a lot of things like a normal person but have to really push hard cause if i had my way, I would sleep...but that is what the dragon wants so ..dance on it's head. Sorry your vacation was cut short. I have bee nthinking about taking the boys overnight somewhere to just get away and play. I think I am taking Friday off and taking them to the Indian Museum at Foxwoods. It isnt really part of the casino so I don't have to worry abotu the..not now boys..mooma needs a new pair of shoes...danger. Guest guest
Hi Sweetie, I am glad that you are somewhat better. I wish that I had the time to call you and talk to you before I left. If you can do the MTX , do it. After some time, I did feel a difference, the only problem is that I cannot get past 25mg of pred, so we are trying for Enbrel. Although I do feel pretty good on MTX, doc says that I should be able to get off of pred, but it's not working...a 25 mg is a safety zone for me. As for Foxwoods...I live not even 10 minutes from there!!! I have to work Friday, but if you go, please tell me and I will meet you afterwards or something. Anything okay? Let me know. Good to hear from you. Many, many hugs....love you. Love,Sue #2 -- Re: ! I am ok my friend. Guest guest
that's fine sweetie. Just know that I only live 10 minutes from Foxwoods, so I can meet you anytime. I would LOVE to have lunch anytime. It would be so wonderful to meet someone from the east with Stills. We have to get too. Love,Sue #2 -- Re: !> > I am ok my friend.
