Girl pulls up `hubby' for HIV infection

IMPHAL, May 27 : For the first time in Manipur, a girl has sought a compensation

of Rs 5 lakhs from her `husband' for allegedly infecting her with HIV after she

was forced to live as his wife.

The case has been brought to the notice of a rights panel.

In her petition, the girl, t (name changed) said that she was abducted by

one (name changed) in the early part of March this year and they stayed

together at a place at Thoubal for some a few days.

The girl said she was forced to stay with as his father and another

relative threatened her to become the wife of .

However on March 11 night, she found some papers in an almirah which confirmed

that is HIV positive. No one, or his family members, told her about

the HIV status of the man with whom she was forced to live together as husband

and wife, said the petition.

After numerous attempts, t said she managed to escape on April 5.

The girl contended that the man and his family members deceived her,

putting her life at risk and her reputation on the line. Apprehensive that she

might have also contracted the disease, she has been under- going treatment,

said the girl and sought a compensation of Rs 5 lacs.

After t was abducted, her younger brother filed a complaint with the police

on March 3 and on March 11 surrendered to the police. He was subsequently

released on bail.

After perusing the matter the rights body has registered a case and ordered that

a copy of the complaint of the girl be sent to the DGP for his comments.

HIV infected `hubby' threatens girl

IMPHAL, May 28: Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has sought police

protection for the girl who had demanded compensation from her `husband' for

allegedly infecting her with HIV, following life threat on the girl by the

accused person.

The accused person had allegedly threatened the girl with dire consequence as

she was coming out from RIMS hospital where she had come for treatment this

morning.

The girl had filed a complaint petition to the rights panel seeking compensation

of Rs 5 lakhs for infecting her with the HIV virus by her `husband' after she

was forced to live as his wife.

Taking the matter into consideration, following another complaint, the rights

panel asked the police for extending every possible help by way of giving escort

to the girl so that she can get herself examined by doctors at RIMS Hospital.

In her complaint, the girl said that her life is at risk as she was threatened

by the accused HIV infected man and prayed for police protection.

In her earlier petition, the girl contended that she was kidnapped by the man in

the early part of March last and she was forced to stay with the man `like

husband and wife' for some days at Thoubal. But after confirming that the man

was infected by the dreaded disease, she managed to escape from his clutch on

April 5.

Yesterday, the right panel had ordered for sending a copy of the complaint

petition to the DGP for his comments as regard to the investigation of the case.
