Dear Forum,

I would like to share a news with you, published in the daily publication of

“The Daily Telegrams”, published from Port Blair in the edition of May 30, 2004.

Pune, May 29: Clinical trail on humans of a vaccine that could avert

contracting AIDS disease could begin by year end, according to the National AIDS

Research Institute (NARI) OF Pune. “Work on development of an experimental

vaccine which could prevent a person succumbing from AIDS is in full swing and

probably by year-end the clinical trail on humans would commence”’ Dr. Ramesh

Pranjape, office-in-charge, told PTI.

“Test on one animal is complete and we will soon start experimenting doses of

the vaccine on rabbits”, he said. Pranjape said NARI is awaiting clearance from

regulatory authorities for further trails. “The vaccine is being developed for

those who are not affected by AIDS but to prevent them from contracting the

deadly disease,” Pranjape said.

NARI, along with other three organizations-National AIDS Control

Organisation, Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and International AIDS

Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) are currently working on developing a Modified Vaccine

Ankara (MVA) for specific subtype C strain, he said.

The new vaccine akin to Recombinant adeno-associate Virus (AVV). Adeno 5 and

Seniliki Forest Virus (SFV) was being developed in accordance with

recommendations made by President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam late last, year, Pranjape

added.
