Guest guest
Why isn't everyone writing their state rep about this... I am not a member of the network and no one should be standing idly by... if you goto the capitol hill website you can get your state's email and USPS address and write a letter of concern and fight this. Guest guest
Donna has a letter there that you can copy the body and then send it off to your congressman. If you make soap and you want to continue to make soap then all the 4,000 members of bath and body group need to flood capital hill. We need to start throwing some of OUR weight around. http://www.indiebus <http://www.indiebusinessblog.com/indie_business/2008/06/stop-the-fda-gl.htm l> inessblog.com/indie_business/2008/06/stop-the-fda-gl.html Lucinda /President America's Favorite Herb Shop! Guest guest
I have a question~ Do they regulate farmers at farmers markets like this? I understand why they want to do it~ but to me and I could be wrong (I was once before) it seems like they're trying to take choice away from consumers. Like they decide what it good for us and what's not? Are they also going to tell us what preservative we have to use later on? How far will this go? That is the scary part ~This just doesn't make sense to me~ Sindy maybe someone needs to splain it to me in plain English ~ It seems we're just trying to get big government in bed with us~ like we're not intelligent enough to make our own choices or decisions. Guest guest
Everyone! Please note, you do NOT have to be a member of Indie to sign the petition! Just go to the blog and enter your comment and sign.  Also, those of you who have blogs and/or websites, it is encouraged to post information about this and send them to the blog on Indie. This will affect not only small businesses that offer products but also the suppliers, and consumers.  Let's all join together on this VERY important issue! Spread the word, sign the petition, and send your letters to the govermental body that is trying to legislate our freedoms and dreams into the abyss.  Sincerely, http://www.herbalnatures.com Nature's Goodness Blended for Natural Beauty > Great way to start a Monday. > > > > Please watch the video Donna Marie has made about > the legislation > > coming down the pike. Guest guest
here in canada, the ministry of heallth describes cosmetics as " any substance or preparation used on the skin or body for esthetic or maintenance purposes " .. since soap is used on the skin, and cleansing is considered maintenance, soap is in fact a cosmetic (at least by canadian and many european laws) we have a similar policy in place here in canada that mirrors the aims of the FDA globalization Act and really, it's not that bad. Guest guest
I'm going to chime in here - because the THEY are trying to do the same thing to use herbalists - we are not allowed to " prescribe " herbs to help people and any herb that is recommended or suggested will soon be governed by the AMA - now, how stupid is that!? You KNOW that physicians are in the pocket of the drug companies, so no one is going to allow herbalists to tell client/patients that " if you eat this dandelion leaf that is growing freely in your backyard, you'll be relieved of this, that and the other malady that you've been complaining about without buying any drugs or visiting with any doctor " - even though it's been done for hundreds of years. We'll all be forced to go underground!! OK, off my soapbox now :-) Kathi Garrison, MH Master Herbalist Professional Member of American Botanical Council _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of sindy Sent: Monday, June 30, 2008 12:00 PM Subject: Re: FDA Globalization Act of 2008 I have a question~ Do they regulate farmers at farmers markets like this? Guest guest
DEAR GROUP, Why dont we get an organized group petition and send it in (someone said we are 4000 strong). I dont really know how to do this so we can all be under one petition then send to: virgil.miller@... Here is the petition from: http://www.indiebusinessblog.com/indie_business/2008/06/stop-the-fda-gl.html?cid\ =120730550#comment-120730550 Petition We are the owners of small cosmetics companies, and the customers who love their products. We understand that laws must be in place to protect everyone from unsafe products, but we are outraged by the Draft Legislation that would require small cosmetics companies to pay thousands of dollars a year in registration fees and comply with burdensome paperwork that would serve only to put them out of business. If passed the legislation would deny thousands of families the ability to earn an honest living, and also deprive consumers of the variety of cosmetics and personal care products available to choose from. We oppose this law and condemn any companies that support it as being interested only in creating an unlevel playing field where small and family owned businesses will be forced from the marketplace before they even get a chance to start out. We urge you, as our representatives in Congress, to stop this law which would serve only to make it even harder for families to support themselves. We call instead for a real and meaningful discussion about how Congressional goals can be accomplished without enacting unfair laws that make it impossible for small businesses to survive. In signing this Petition, we formally request that the Discussion Draft of the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 be marked up so that the legitimate concerns of small businesses and the consumers they serve can be translated into reasonable laws that protect consumers without also killing small businesses by making them pay unfair fees and comply with burdensome paperwork. We sincerely thank you for your time. Maybe someone has access to a webpage that when signed the information will stay on the site. Let me ask my web guy. If we can just spread one link, that everyone can sign, then the link owner can email the signatures to the above email address. Any ideas??? We do ned to stick together on this issue. This is absurd and just another example of America trying yet again to snuff out the small business owner. Lets work together on this!!!! Have a great day, R. Guest guest
No one has an extra couple grand laying around but here's how the transition worked for us... we are registered and pay our fees for that.. we create our products and send an itemized declared inci listing and manufacturer report to the ministry of health for review and approval for each item we intend to make available for sale... we are subject to in home inspections without notice, everything is closely monitored. Now the drawbacks are obvious, and I was not pleased when they changed all these laws in the beginning, but here is what I noticed... it seems the only ones who didn't continue their business were not those in financial duress, but rather those that were using inferior products or mislabelling, allowing those who registered more customers. As well, we were able to charge a bit more, as consumers understood this was a product that was endorsed by the government, and therefore completely safe for them to use, free of restricted chemicals, and bearing no false advertising or misleading advertising claims (we have an acceptable list of claims and may not state anything in our ads or literature that promote our products as drugs or therapeutic aids, else we must also register as with the food and drug admin)... We make more money now, much more in the end... and because people can buy with confidence, I'm seeing more and m ore people, from all different demographics, trying out handmade products since now they have some semblance of security in doing so. I didn't think it would, but in truth.. its helped us. Guest guest
One can tell from 10 Miles away that the Bigger Companies are in colusion pushing this barrow. If this act does get passed into law then the small operators have some comeback. It would come down to Interstate groups or franchises pushing a common product and splitting the fee's costs and profits. Instead of a one or two person show how about 50 people in various states acting as as a co-op. This would be far more damaging to the big companies as the groups would be able to have fantastic market penetration by directly targeting the big Companies customers across the whole retail spectrum. If only this was an easy thing to arrange, it would be one sure way of having this cripple legislation blow up in the instigators face. > > > No one has an extra couple grand laying around but > > here's how the transition worked for us... > > we are registered and pay our fees for that.. > > >

Guest guest
I would like to say a few Gordon Ramsays about this act! For those who do not know about Gordon Ramsay, he is a TV Chef that openly uses the dreaded F word to make a strong point. I looked at joining a group that could act as a common voice but again the hand was diving towards my bank account in a big way. Why they cannot have an associate membership for say $50 to cover things like Internet cost for time taken for list management I do not know. I have been self employed since I was 21 I am now 46 I have seen just too many opportunists jumping on a cause such as this to fill their own bank accounts. Who is going to be the voice of the small operator? What structure is in place. Who runs it? Are there elections? Any Industry body needs to be held accountable from the small business that they are set up to protect. I still think that small group franchising over the Whole Continents is the way to beat the big boy's. USA, Asia Pacific, Europe. Look back to how Avon started and how big it became with a spread of sellers. Now Who wants their products marketed in Australia? I am in a good position to start a Country wide Avon type distribution over here. Who wants to join me? Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained! The only !!! way to survive these attacks that are obviously being pushed by the Big companies is to become BIG. Who cares if it has 50 or 100 equal owners, as long as there is committment and a Goal it can be done. All it needs is a bit of Democracy, something many current Governments seem to have forgotten. Guest guest
While I have pondered this idea many times, I would like to point out that the FDA globalization act 2008 would impose the $2000 fee for each location. So, if we were to form some kind of umbrella organization/coop the only way we could save any money on the fees would be to work under one roof. > The only !!! way to survive these attacks that are obviously being > pushed by the Big companies is to become BIG.
