Guest guest
Dear forum, Parivartan has been active in AIDS related issues since 1997. Together with UNICEF we started our campaign, which focused at AIDS prevention aspects in select schools of Gujarat. The success of that pilot project encouraged us to include more schools from other parts of the state. We also set up a VCTC Centre in the district. To work with and for the PLWHA was the next in our agenda. In fact, it was my personal dream. Very recently we organised an informal meeting for the PLWHA of the areas. Our aim was to form a network of the local PLWHA and connect them with other similar forums. Fortunately we could have with us the state secretary of the PLWHA network during the meeting. The meeting, which was meant for two hours continued for five hours. But what was significant, the change of attitude of the PLWHAs. They were sceptical, even angry in the beginning and thought it was some kind of interview to be published in the press. Mistaking us for press reporters, one lady said " I don't want to be here. Last time you people have taken my interview and when I read the report published in your newspaper, you omitted the vital nformations regarding our concerns and the care and support part. " I assured her that we are not from the press and explained our objectives. Both - the PLWHA secretary and I talked to them at a length about how they could make their life more productive, meaningful and worth living. The impact of our talk, especially of the secretary, who was a vibrant, young and herself a positive person was enormous. By the time the meeting was over, we could see the changed expression in their face. Their eyes shined with hope, they laughed a lot and they thanked us for bringing them together. They were only five on that day but it was a new beginning for them and for us as well. Before ending the day, we fixed the date for our next meeting.
