If you are interested to get trained, please contact the demonstration centres. Voluntary Health Services (VHS), Chennai, is implementing the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) assisted AIDS Prevention and Control (APAC) Project in Tamil Nadu. The goal of APAC is to reduce the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS in Tamil Nadu. One of our major thrust areas in this Project is to support NGO intervention programs that promote behavioral change in those individuals/groups whose behaviour puts them at high risk for acquiring or transmitting HIV infection, increase condom usage and improve quality and access to STD services. NACO has designated APAC-USAID as a TRG for targeted interventions. People's Development Initiatives (PDI) is implementing a STD/HIV/AIDS prevention programme among slum population. The programme is supported by AIDS prevention and control project (APAC). APAC has designed a experiential learning program for the training of SACS and NGO staff in implementation of Targeted Interventions, and supports PDI as a Demonstration centre for imparting this training. People's Development Initiatives (PDI) is a non-governmental organisation established with a voluntary participation of a team of development workers, doctors, academicians and researchers who are devoted to the development of the deprived and own a wealth of experiences in humanitarian activities. Demonstration Centre for Capacity Building on Interventions Targeted at Young people living in urban underdeveloped settlements (slums) Importance of targeted intervention: Targeted intervention is the approach for STD/HIV/AIDS to reach the high risk groups who are at the risk of getting and transmitting HIV/AIDS infection. It includes advocacy for enabling environment, control of sexually transmitted diseases and promotion of condoms. TI adopts effective communication methods to bring about behaviour change among high risk groups. STD/HIV/AIDS prevention among slum population (SIP): STD/HIV/AIDS prevention programme is carried out among the high risk groups in slum communities. The main strategies are: a.. Behaviour change communication b.. Quality STD services c.. Condom promotion d.. Establishing a network of peer educators e.. Creating an enabling environment through advocacy f.. Working through the community based organisation such as Mahila Mandals, Youth groups, fan clubs and community welfare associations. Goal: The main goal of the demonstration centre is to help build capacity of agencies to implement STD/HIV/AIDS prevention among high risk population. Objectives: To conduct hands on training on interventions targeted at high risk groups in slum settings. To organize field placement programs for specific skill development (counseling, peer education, condom promotion, etc) To function as a resource center for targeted interventions among slum populations. The demonstration center adopts participatory training methods in building the knowledge, attitude and skills of the participants on targeted intervention. The following participatory methods are used: a.. Lecture and discussions b.. Group exercises c.. Field visits d.. Demonstrations e.. Role plays f.. Games g.. Problem based learning h.. Case analysis i..
