thank you for lds candidates for their free efforts and their support

OSCE's in LDS on 06/12/2011.

1. Anaphylaxis emergency:

Scenario: a patient is sat on a chair, and the question states that you have

given them L.A. and the patient is experiencing difficulty in breathing, and

flushing.

What is your response, and which drug will you pick from the medical emergency

kit? Route of administration, dose, follow up procedure….

Show the examiner how you would apply the oxygen mask to the patient

Show the examiner how you would call 999 and what will you say…

2. Oral hygiene instructions:

Scenario: A patient is sat on the chair, and you are asked to give them oral

hygiene instruction using the tools available on the table: Jaw with teeth,

tooth brush, floss, interdental brushes (different types)…You should show the

correct technique of holding the tooth brush against the teeth and explain to

patient..

3. Angina going to MI

Scenario: A patient is lying on the bed, with symptoms of crushing pain in there

chest, what's your response and which drug will you pick from the medical

emergency kit? Route of administration, dose, follow up procedure….remember:

999, GTN, oxygen, aspirin, assure patient…

What is the action of Aspirin?

4. Retained root of lower left 6 to be removed, design the flap and identify

some surgical instruments.

Questions:

1-Draw the most suitable muco-periosteal flap needed to remove the remaining

root of the lower left 6

2- Mention 3 principles of muco-periosteal flap design

3- Which of the following is the most appropriate instrument used to retract the

flap, elevate the flap, remove the root…… a choice of instruments are given and

labelled

5. Dispose clinical and domestic waste; about 12-15 things left had to dispose

in black bin, yellow bin, autoclave, cold soak bath, sharp bin

Examples of things are: Clamp with floss, gloves, metal syringe, probe, gloves

packet, needle…etc.

6. Prescription writing for denture stomatitis

A photo is given of the palate with red denture induced stomatitis, and the

patient is on warfarin, write a prescription, and name other drugs that could be

useful

(An example photo only, not the actual exam one)

7. Discuss about I V sedation with the patient

Discuss with the patient the options of sedation and the advantages and

disadvantages of each

8. Dental charting

For upper and lower teeth, missing, fillings, crowns, drifted, needs

extraction….

9. Mixed dentition OPG radiograph: mark erupted and un-erupted teeth. Identify

age of the pt, circle the supernumerary tooth.

10. Chocking emergency: A dummy is lying on bed, it has swallowed a crown while

you were about to try on the tooth, what is your response, explain what you will

do on the dummy

11. IV access on epileptic patient.

A patient with a history of epilepsy, starts symptoms in your dental chair,

establish an I.V. access and canula

You have to choose the correct drug, the correct size needle, the site of

access, the correct angulation of needle when inserting, how to apply the

plaster, dispose the needle in the sharps

12. Faults in cast partial denture,

A metal partial denture is given on a cast, you need to identify the Kennedy

classification, type of support, and the faults in the denture

13.Oral Medicine:

4 pictures, one showing ulcer from the drug (state the most likely diagnosis

e.g. lichenoid reaction, and what drugs could cause it), other recurrent

aphthous ulcer, SCC (on lateral border of tongue) and vesicullousbullous lesion.

14. Record BPE score.

A jaw with teeth and a soft gingiva in a phantom head is present, and you are

asked to record the BPE using the correct technique and choosing the correct

probe (WHO), and write your score for the 6 sextants, and what would your

management be for each score

(N.B. some teeth had recession, bifurcation…etc.)

15. Arrange Intra Oral Periapical radiographs.

16 periapical radiographs to be mounted in the correct way, with the upper

centrals missing, and some teeth could be repeated on the radiographs

16. Patient has food impaction with lower 6, she had radiotherapy in past, uses

artificial saliva, discuss options of manegment. (N.B. extraction is the last

option as could lead to osteoradionecrosis)
