dear masab i liked your answer but could you please tell me the reference .I can see that hco3 has an imp role but mg does too by relaxing the nerve so every one play a significant role for the nerve so which one is the most imp.and one final thing the q about ion while hco3 is compound so i think it most be mg

hello pearl!the ion necessary for action potential as asked in first question is HCO3. it maintains intercellular nerve potential negative with respect to extracellular.in your second question, the Na+ ion moves inward and causes the action potential.
