its not silver but zinc in amalgam that leads to delayed expansion.

moisture contamination during trituration/condensation of amalgam leads to the formation on zinc oxide and hydrogen gs,which is released nd gives rise to the symptoms seen on the 3-5day after the cavity is filled.

silver in amalgam is the major constituent forming the bulk but does not cause expansion
