Following matrix band placement, a wedge is placed.Following wedging, the teeth

will be slightly moved apart. Then the band is burnished against the contact

point. This ensures contact between restoration and adjacent tooth once the

wedge and band is removed. So if we miss to place wedges it will result in open

contacts. Also wedges help to approximate bands to the cervical margins of the

cavity. If not cervical margins will be overfilled (especially in mesial surface

of upper first premolars where concavity of canine fossa interfere with band

adaptation).

Hope this helps.
