Guest guest
In the new guidelines, there are 2 chapters (chapters 2 and 3) referring to basic life support. I feel there may be conflicting information in these chapters regarding the use and the exact timing of AED use for a single-rescuer. For clarification I have listed the relevant text below and have attached a copy of the latest guidelines. In chapter 2 (page 17) there is an adult basic life support algorithm. There is no mention of use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in this algorithm. However, chapter 3 titled the use of Automated External Defibrillators, page 29 , 3rd paragraph reads " the resuscitation council UK recommends strongly a policy of attempting defibrillation with the minimum of delay in victims of VF/VT cardiac arrest " . Again on page 31 of the same chapter there is another algorithm (titled AED algorithm) that instructs the rescuer to " carry out CPR 30:2 until AED is attached " . Page 32 item 2,1st bullet point reads " if you are alone, stop CPR and switch on the AED " . On page33 under the heading CPR before defibrillation the text reads " giving a specified period of CPR as a routine before rhythm analysis and shock delivery, is not recommended " My questions are as follows: 1) In the exam situation, should a single-rescuer that has AED available after calling 999, start using AED immediately or should he/she start CPR and wait for examiner's instruction/prompt to use AED?
