i would say that this is down to the Occupational Health Dr and you. Risk assess

it and then say " NO " .

But definitely get your Occ Health on this one.

By the way - Did he tell you or did you do a spirometery test?

Subject: COPD offshore in the UK

Hi all,

We have had an issue with a worker suffering from COPD.

Can anyone tell me if workers with COPD are allowed offshore in the UK or other

European sectors?

Regards,

.

We have had issues recently with US individuals with health problems offfshore

and what with working with a US Company, the US Disabilities Act was very much

an issue. We broke it down to its simplest i.e. the individuals ability to self

rescue in the event of an emergency, and having focused on that, we decided that

if due to mobility or other health issues that the individual may compromise his

own safety or the safety of others he or she was not allowed to remain offshore.

Is the individual you are dealing with compromised on stairs, is he likely to be

more affected in a smokey envirnoment than an individual with normal lungs ? The

first step would probably be to measure his peakflow which you can probably do

on site. Any abnormality there should lead to lung function testing ashore.

Ultimately it a fitness for work issue, and therefore a full Occupational Health

Evaluation should be sought.

Et all:

Would the role or position have any bearing on this situation in the UK or

other sectors in Europe. I can see if hem is a driller, on the floor, a manual

labourer or whatever. What if he is a pencil pusher or admin type or even a

company man and his COPD is controlled. Here in rights crazy Canukistan (sorry I

know were taking a different country here) if " worker " has been working in any

role prior and then relieved of duty because of medical disclosure ONLY (not an

acute situation requiring medical intervention) one would be looking at a right

to work situation, a rights law suit +++, FOIP (freedom of information

protection) or more commonly referred to in the industry as (F*** O** It's

PRIVATE)

Yes, I know " pre " hiring conditions always have an escape clause.

I do have a query: COPD is a triad of pathologies: Chronic Bronchitis, Asthma,

and/or Emphysema (centrilobular in most cases ) so just what form are we talking

about here ?

What do " buddy's " PFTs/ spirometry look like in FEV1 to FVC and what's the cut

off for employment, is there a standard or just a blank open policy ?

You state " suffering ? from COPD " is he uncontrolled ?

cheers

Wilf

ps I don't suffer from insanity .. I ENJOY it.

Tony,

He was a contractor who got his medical from another medical provider near his

home who obviously didn't stick to the guidelines.

I wasn't sure fo them so though't I'd fire it in here. He;s now gone in.

Thanks,
