Hi Folks,

I am a newbie and I have some questions about web sites. How do you go about

getting one? I'd like to have one for my soaps and bath bags but I don't

know where to start. Do I pay someone to do it for me or do I do it myself?

Are there monthly fees involved in owning a web site? What kind of costs are

involved? I'm sorry if these sound like silly questions but like I said, I

don't know much about this at all. Thank you for your help.

With just a little patience, you can build your own site - there are

tons of free sites that offer tutorials. You can either code it

yourself or use a program like Dreamweaver or Frontpage (I use

frontpage, but many people find that to be not-so-user-friendly). I

would be happy to answer any questions when you start. I design and

maintain websites for my company, so I am slightly familiar with it!! I

also did my own website in just a few minutes (and sometimes it looks

like it too!!): www.roundrockessentials.com. I also have a free family

site: www.pobox.com/~krasch (which seems to be down at the moment).

As to a website: First you find a name that you like and then search to

make sure it is not already taken (http://www.internic.com/ is one place

you can check). Then you register a name you like (www.imakesoap.com)

with Verisign (costs is about 35.00 for two years). Then you need to

find someone to 'host' it (like renting a space). We use

www.readyhosting.com cost is about 50.00 a year (my husband actually

resells for readyhosting). Then, when you have designed and gotten your

site just like you want, you upload it to your 'rented space'. That's

all it is.

Then you start the tedious but necessary job of submitting your site to

search engines... but that is a much longer post... etc...

No such thing as a silly question! How else are you going to learn? I know

how you feel, I also have the same questions, but I figure everybody else had

to start at the beginning, too!

Another place to get a domain name is www.godaddy.com It's a bit cheaper

than most, they can also host your site too. Just a thought if you are a

bit tight on cash. That's where I got my domain name, I'm not having them

host it cause I have a friend who will host it for me for free (I know

lucky me!) the downside is I can't do anything with it until I get a

static or semi static IP address (i.e. not dial up) *sigh* I might just

bite the bullet and find some place to host it, it might just be cheaper

for me in the long run. LOL (I'm still pushing for the cable access

though... my DH and I REALLY want the instant gratification...) OK I'm

starting to babble time to fall down go boom. Night all

I wasn't trying to intimate or insult anyone. I was merely saying, for

ppl with no experience in this area (just like with anything), buying a

book and software can be frustrating and time consuming. Ppl who

publish these things, are in the business of selling them, that's why

they often say " anyone can do this in a matter of hours. " My point was,

if you read my email closely, that this isn't the case and buying

these things is often a waste of money and time. I've helped many

friends out who have taken this route only to give up and wished they'd

found a student to put together a simple site for them. Again--before

you make anymore assumptions--I'm not saying this will be you.

I also never insuated that building a web site is " brain surgery where

life and death is involved " . As an example, if I want to sell my

house, I would call a real estate agent. This is not because I couldn't

EVENTUALLY figure out how to sell it myself, but because my time is

worth more than trying to learn how to sell a house with no prior

experience. For anyone who's willing to make the time and monetary

investment of building a web site, it's a great project. You only have

to be aware that when starting from scratch, it's going to be a big

project. Again, not saying this is you, . I'm sure your

Christmas cards are quite lovely as will be your site.

Many of us have no choice but to take the time and effort to DIY because we

simply can’t afford to do what we want any other way. So either we learn to

DIY or it won’t get done. I’m well aware that when it comes to building a

web site that I am too far behind to learn how to do it as a career. I

understood that years ago. But if I can build my own the way I want it, I’ll

be happy. It’s like we make our soap and stuff at home because we cannot

afford to rent separate space. We do our best.

Based upon what my late friend (a web designer) told me, I wouldn’t build a

site with Front Page.

I got my site hosted by elori.com. Lori and her husband, Steve, are sooooo

nice. Lori is a soaper herself, so she understands the needs we have. I

found that they were very helpful and cheap too. Their website explains it

all and they offer 3 different packages.

Recently my hard drive crashed and the list I was developing of links

to medical websites-remote duty medicine type of info has been lost.

I am recompiling my list and wanted to know if any of you have any

links you would like to share or recommend that you fill give quality

information.

Also if anyone has any links to training websites, that would be

greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks and be safe.
