There has been extensive testing of xylitol on humans. Not only has it

been found safe, it has also been found to be beneficial. For one

example of its benefits see

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=521689

Gosh I didn't know Sainsbury's were doing it, how much, it's dead dear normally!

The only thing I noticed was my youngest who I actually bought it for can tell the difference straight off and wont touch anything I bake with it, the others don't notice any difference at all! typical.

Hi Steph,

I love the stuff and it's wonderful for baking, lemonade etc in the

summer. didn't suspect that his food had been doctored in any

way either when I baked with it. My only problem is that it is very

expensive here in Greece - 17 E a kilo. Hope Sainsbury's price tag is a

bit more modest!

Hi ,

I use xylitol all the time. One of the side effects of xylitol I'm

hoping for is a reduction in cavities. Because of nightime dosing,

I'm afraid my son will get cavities. Xylitol is supposed to very

effective in reducing the bacteria that can give us cavities. Using

xylitol is also supposed to reduce ear infections in children by

40%. My poor son has one right now though, so....

When I bake with it, I replace it one to one. If the recipe called

for one cup of sugar, I use one cup of xylitol. I think the only

problem might be if the recipe calls for yeast, since the xylitol

isn't supposed to feed the yeast. Most xylitol is made from corn or

birch bark. If you have a problem with corn, you may want to search

out the birch bark xylitol.

Hi Steph,

I also use this a lot as Jack misses his sugar fix!! I use it just like normal sugar but reduce the quantity slightly in cakes. It works very well in cakes but I find it makes biscuits a bit soft! Only problem is the price tag. I pay £8.50 for a 500g bag at the moment so if it is available from Sainsburys I'm off for a look! I also buy dark choc made with this and also he has the occassional chew containing it as a treat.

Hi Vicky -

Happens I read an article about Xylitol in The Candida Society

quarterly. Seemingly you can also get it in Holland and Barret,

[Perfect Sweet] Waitrose or from Higher Nature through Nutricentre.

Higher Nature market it as ZyloSweet and charge £5.30 for 335 mg.

Dear, but you could make use of Nutricentre discount maybe?

Hi Steph,

because my son will not drink water but has to have squash or juice,

i add a small amount of xylitol to his drink to combat the bacteria

that cause tooth decay. It does seem to help as his teeth always

look cleaner when i use it and yuckier when i forget.

I have'nt used it in cooking though, i believe it is High Oxalate so

if anyone is trying LOD that's something you need to be aware of.

Very helpful thanks. Tom's teeth are often a bit claggy. Think he

doesn't produce enough saliva as he only really drinks water and

green tea (yes, really!). Can't find this in Sainsbury in our local

town so think it might be a trip to A Big(ger) City.

Interesting. So, if we can just use the " industrious " bit rather

than the 4am bit for Tom.

He's having caffeine free green tea - he glugs it down so thought

might be wise. Odd taste for a seven year old but it's full of

antioxidants so we're not complaining!

Yes, I am getting my info from Grazia magazine - clearly a reliable

source (lol). They said Holland and Barrett, Sainsbury and Waitrose.

Think they may have ommitted to add " in the London area " as we can't

find it, yet. So, a prize for the first lister to find this in a

mainsteam shop in the UK... not in London. I put it into Ebay and you

can buy it in sackloads from the US, £8 for 5 lbs. But once you add

the postage it's about £17 for 5lbs.

Hi Steph

Don't know if this counts as we live in St Albans Hertfordshire (about 25

miles from central London) but the St Albans Sainsburys sells it.

Hi

I bought my packet a couple of weeks ago so can't remember how much exactly,

but I think it was about £3 for 225g.

I had a look at it's website and it is made from corn husks, here's the

link:-

Aha! Good call. THere is one on Ebay that's not corn based - think

it's birch based (yum!)

So Mandi's idea about importing is probably going to be the best as

lots of kids on corn free (Tom's not but I think he may soon be).

Still, £3 better than £6.49! Thought it unlikely that Sainsbury

would stock something so incredibly expensive.

Hi Donna,

I picked up some at the local health food store. 16 oz. for $6.79 by

NOW. Picked up some gum, too, because I like to chew gum.

Word of caution: The lady at the store warned it can lower you blood

sugar. Didn't think much of it one way or the other because I don't

have low blood sugar problems, but today I was talking on the phone

which delayed lunch. Not really 'hungry', but it was lunch time and

getting later. Decided I'm grab a piece of gum and continue my phone

conversation. It didn't take long and I started actually getting kind

of shaky. I didn't even make the correlation with the gum. I just

knew I needed to eat and eat now. Ended up hanging up and eating more

than my normal amount before I could get the shaking to stop. Still

didn't make the connection until later when I recalled my conversation

with the woman at the HFS.

Have been brushing with it for a few days now. Never noticed anything

when brushing my teeth with it, but one usually doesn't brush BEFORE

eating.

I suppose there are other brands maybe even better quality, but so far

I'm happy with the NOW brand.

One more thing.

I actually emailed Audrey from the iodine list privately after she

made that post because I had hurt my teeth/gums chewing on some nuts

that required going to the dentist who informed me I now have gum

disease. I rushed home and emailed Audrey.

She said she gets hers' at VRP.com and is a good quality. They have

2.2 lbs. for $21.95, if you are interested. However, I just read the

ingredience on the NOW brand. It say 100% pure xylitol. Pure is

pure to me.

Hey Gail,

http://www.iherb.com has it for $15.29 for a 3 pound bag. but then there

is shipping, so it ends up not being that great of a deal.

I found it here for $9.71 for the 3 pound bag, but when I tried to order

two bags and expected the shipping to be around $7 it showed up as

$23.55 for shipping for two bags. Yikes.

I'm currently paying around $6.29 a pound. . .Just looking for a better

price.

Sorry to hear about your gums. Swishing with h202 helps.

Thanks for your input

Hi all,

I discovered Xilotol and simply can't live without it now! I purchase it at

Super Supplements at a fair price here in the Seattle area.

http:///www.supersupplements.com

You may be able to purchase it online.
