Guest guest
Thanks for the motivation! Unfortunately my husband does not like working out in the garage and decided to join the gym again, so I am on my own. I am trying to make it a point to drag myself out of bed in the morning and start my day off with some exercise, even if it a slow walk on the treadmill. I am guessing something is better than nothing. It is pulling myself out of bed that is hard. Thanks again for your motivating e-mail! Guest guest
That is a real good point . I never really thought of it that way. Thanks!
Guest guest
My daughter likes doing Turbo Jam with me. She is 12. It is fun, but she gets worn out after about 30 minutes and I have to encourage her to keep going.

Not sure about the age of your kids or your schedule but I’ll tell you how I work it out. I get up earlier than my family and sneak in some exercise then. And after the kids are in bed (my kids are in bed at 8pm) I sneak in more exercise. If it has been a long day I usually spend an hour reading or relaxing and then do my exercise. Somedays it doesn’t work, but more often than that it does. I also sneak in exercise with the kids we play ball, go for long walks, play games, dance etc etc. That is great! I need to push myself to get up in the morning. I think I will try to take everyone's advice about making it a requirement rather than an option. I like that approach. Thanks everyone! Guest guest
Hello! My name is Jenni and our son Caleb, has been in a Boston brace since November - 23 hours a day. After many trials and errors, we landed on your everyday little boys undershirts (i.e. Fruit of the Loom, Hanes, etc.). They don't have seams on the sides and because of the sleeves, they cover him high enough under the armpit so the brace doesn't rub. Tank top type undershirts didn't work for us. I worried about the lack of softness as compared to baby onsies, but we have had no problems. Did your orthotist tell you not to put the brace back on if the skin stays red for more than 20 min. or if the skin breaks? It bothered us to not have the brace on, but we thought it would be off more if we allowed to irritation to turn into a festering sore. The literature that came w/ Caleb's brace also said to wipe the skin covered by the brace with rubbing alcohol (unless it is irritated) every time the brace is off to help toughen the skin, keep it clean and make sure it was really dry. As for the sweating, try putting her in lighter clothes. I know that sounds rather " duh " , but when our daughter is wearing sweaters and heavy coats, Caleb is wearing cotton shirts and thinner coats or he burns up. I don't have any experience with caring for a child in a cast, but from what I've heard on this message board, it sounds like braces are hotter than casts. Maybe because they're tighter? On to the bunching . . . . Before putting the brace on, I make sure I pull the undershirt down from the bottom starting in the front and then gather it in the back, where the straps are, so the bulk is in the space where the 2 sides meet. I purposely put the brace on a little higher than it needs to be so I can pull the shirt down with it when sliding the brace into place. Then I velcro the middle strap enough to hold the brace in place and tug down on the shirt some more, starting in the front and working my way to the back, to make sure it's not bunching anywhere. Depending on how old your child is, I would definitely recommend having some sort of distraction, like a toy or t.v. show, when putting the brace on. For Caleb, that cuts down significantly on the wiggling. I keep a book and car at the foot of the bed (chest level for Caleb) so he has to stand straight to play with them. I have learned that the key is to make sure the brace is on really tight. The tighter it is, the better it will hold the shirt - and his spine - in place. And if it is really too tight, your child will let you know. It was really hard to imagine that Caleb could breathe with it so tight, but he is doing just fine. My legs and our furniture can attest to his complete comfort (and armor- like protection) when wearing his brace! It took us longer than it did him to adjust to it. Part of " hunkering down " is making sure the brace is nice and tight. It easily took me 2 months to not worry constantly (and I mean constantly) that he wasn't getting big enough breaths so give it some time, unless of course her spine really gets bad. And I have to admit, when I heard back from Shriners in Erie that it looked like the brace was doing the job for Caleb, I was a little disappointed. I have thought a cast might be easier to deal with than a brace. But truth be told, once you get your rhythm, the brace really isn't that bad. I hope my narrative helps some. Please feel free to e-mail if you have any other questions! Guest guest
Hi, Max was in a TLSO brace before he was casted. Our orthotist order the t-shirts for us. We paid him, but it was so well worth it. His oneies weren't working well. Some insurance companies may for some/part of the t-shirts order from the orthotist. I had peace of mind that we were using the right shirt and Max was comfortble. He was much hotter in the brace compared to the cast. Defintely watch for red marks and if the still are presnt after 20 minutes, call your orthotist so it can be adjusted appropriately. MAx had a few red marks, but it was taken care of. So sorry to hear about the curve increase. But hang in there...don't give up hope! You daugther has made it this far. Good luck on monday. Guest guest
Hi, My son is 10 and wears a brace. I use boy's tee shirts that are a size smaller than he would normally wear. When the tee is tighter it is easier to keep it from getting wrinkled or bunchy. Once the brace is on, I pull the tee shirt as tight as I can from the bottom of the brace. I start in the front and work my way around.Hope that helps. gloria
Guest guest
Aekta was very fortunate. Our orthotist told us they didn't make the brace t-shirts small enough for our son (who was 22 months old and in 3T's at the time). Aekta, were the shirts anti-microbal or anything special? Just curious. Thanks! Jenni Caleb's mom > > > > Hi ladies, > > I just have a couple of questions: > > First of all my daughter finally got out of her cast and is in her > > TLSO. Guest guest
Wow, I find that hard to believe that the orthotist said they did't make them small enough. Max was 8 months old and a very thin baby. And the shirt fit just great, maybe a little long, but worked great for his skin. The brand of the shirt is Knit-Rite Seamless. This is what a website said about the t-shirt off another website: " Torso-Interface may be used with all types of spinal orthoses and body jackets. Prescribed to provide improved skin protection and patient comfort, Torso-Interface also may help prevent skin breakdown. The outstanding stretch allows the fit to be virtually wrinkle-free. All styles are latex free; all fabric choices are machine-washable. " Please let me now and I can find out where Max's othrotist was able to get them small enough. Guest guest
Aekta, Come to think of it, they make socks w/ xstatic. My husband requested several pairs for Christmas to use when he's overseas. Apparently, xstatic is the thing and works really well at wicking away moisture and heat. Good to know they make the t-shirts! Good to know! Thanks! Guest guest
Well, the orthotist did admit Caleb was the 1st toddler that he has ever fit for a Boston Brace in his 20+ years in the business. Doesn't instill confidence, but the x-rays - and Dr. at Erie - say it's just what Caleb needs. We'll stick with the t-shirts we have right now, but I have kept your message with the PDF file just in case the Virginia summer is too hot for him - as I expect it will be. I would love to know where Max's orthotist got the shirts, to have that info stored, too. I believe I can get our orthopedist to prescribe them so our insurance will pay for at least a couple. He prescribed them when we first got the brace, but I knew so little at the time that I just didn't question the orthotist. And the undershirts have been working so I just didn't worry about it. We go back for his next 3 month check up on the 22nd so maybe I will approach the t-shirt issue then. Thanks, again, for the info! Guest guest
I will contact Max's orthotist. I need to call him anyhow to get a copy of the payment I made for Max's brace for taxes. Last year was our big healthcare expenditure with Max's MRI and aweful insurance. So Uncle Sam here we come with every medical receipt from 2006! Guest guest
Does the doctor think she should go back into a cast? It sounds like she may have moved into a brace too quickly. What was her rotation when they moved her to a cast? That may be a factor. Ian is down to 11 degrees, but because he still has some rotation, they won't move him to a brace. If their is rotation, that is what causes the curve. So, if she still had some rotation when she went into a brace, then that could explain it or least be one of the factors. If it was Ian, I would be putting him back into a cast and make sure they are addressing her rotation. Keep us posted. Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) Need help Hi ladies, I just have a couple of questions: First of all my daughter finally got out of her cast and is in her TLSO. Where in the world can I find t -shirts to put under the brace that don't get all sweaty and nasty and wrinkled? Her poor skin is a mess where the seams of the t shirts are digging into her. Second- we finally graduated from our 3rd cast and into the brace last week. We had an xray done on Friday and it was terrible. I almost broke down when I saw it, the lumbar and thoracic curve was back. When we went into the brace we were within a few degrees of perfectly straight. Well her spine looked like a snake and that was in the brace. I left and immediately went to the orthotist who added additional pads, and tightened the brace, stating we were really going to have to hunker down. She had been wearing the brace 23.5 hours a day, only off for baths. Has this happened to anyone else? We will repeat the xrays on Monday. Do you think we lost all that we gained? How did this happen? I am so frustrated and really hating the stupid brace. Don't get me wrong, putting her in the tub every night is so nice, but it just seems like I had less to worry about when she was in the cast. Any input is appreciated! Thanks. Guest guest
I have a daughter that wears a cervical collar 24 hours a day -- even in the bath. It is a bit different than the brace but we have had similar skin break down issues so I just thought I'd tell you what we do. We put aquaphor on the places that are red or sore -- you can find it in the baby aisle or moisturizer aisle. The consistency is like vaseline. It works wonders. We also use baby powder or corn starch to " soak up " any perspiration that may occur -- keeping the area dry will help with the break down. I thought the idea of buying the t-shirts one size smaller was really good. I also wondered about tank top or undershirts (maybe last year's tank tops would be small enough to work.) we line my daughters collar with the tops of socks that we have cut and we have found that those that are too big irritate the skin. Maybe that helped a tiny bit ... maybe not my best to you. mary
Guest guest
, Aquaphor works very well on Max's red/sore areas from brace and cast as well. I love using it. Guest guest
Hi, Congratulations. KT is quite an adventure in good health. The cloudy stuff laying on the bottom is yeast....I'm told. It's not the best stuff to start a new batch with but is not a problem to drink it unless you are real sensitive. Hopefully if I am wrong about any of this I'll be corrected. This a wonderful group of very kind and intelligent people. Glad you joined us. Barbara, I have just calculated from my own recipe down to the amount you wish to do ...why such a small amount????? 2 cups of water (about 1/2 litre) 1/3 cup sugar (about 50 grams) 2 tea bags or 2 tsp of open tea. Don't forget to add a little acidic starter or 1 tbsp of distilled vinegar over the top of the brew. Let us know how you get on. Guest guest
Margret, Are you aware that you have to allow your Kombucha to brew for several days? You can't just make a cup or two to drink at will. This is why we brew in larger containers and decant then drink or bottle in smaller, individual bottles. If you knew this already, sorry, I just didn't understand why the small amount either. :-) > > > Hi there, I need help in making up a recipe for a small amount of > > kt..I am just starting my first batch and want to make one for just > > two(2) cups of tea..I need to know how much sugar, water, and tea to > > make this amount.. > > > Barbara, I have just calculated from my own recipe down to the amount > you wish to do ...why such a small amount????? > > 2 cups of water (about 1/2 litre) > 1/3 cup sugar (about 50 grams) > 2 tea bags or 2 tsp of open tea. > > Don't forget to add a little acidic starter or 1 tbsp of distilled vinegar > over the top of the brew. > > Let us know how you get on. > > Margret (UK) :-) > > -- > +------------------ Minstrel@... --------------------+ > <)))<>< http://www.therpc.f9.co.uk <)))<>< > http://www.AnswersInGenesis.com > +----------------- http://www.Gotquestions.org ------------------+ > > ...whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, adnirable, > excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things! Absolutely! I was only given a recipe for a smaller amount to brew. I wonder whether we misunderstood something there .... > You can't just make a cup or two to drink at will. You could make up a proportionally correct sweet tea and introduce a scoby plus starter and ferment it. It's just the small quantity that's odd, but it would still need 7 days to ferment into proper KT! > This is why we brew in larger containers and decant then drink or > bottle in smaller, individual bottles. But Margret thinks about Kombucha brews in many gallons ... gloog-gloog ;-) and so do you ..... I hope, we understand each other :-) Blessings of this Passover time, Margret:-) -- +------------------ Minstrel@... --------------------+ <)))<>< http://www.therpc.f9.co.uk <)))<>< http://www.AnswersInGenesis.com +----------------- http://www.Gotquestions.org ------------------+ The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the righteous run to him and are safe. Guest guest
Thank you all for replying to my need of a small recipe..I thought that I needed to make the KT in small batches until my body got used to it..But, you are right, I should make a big batch and just bottle it up and drink it as I need it. When I bottle up my KT, do I need to keep the lid on tight and not in the fridge? But, keep it in the fridge when I do open it? First time doing this, so need all the help I can get..Take care...Barbara bardell@...
