Guest guest
Gail, Enquiring minds want to know, what did the doctor say ? Is the brace doing its job ? I looked at the x-ray, her back looks perfectly straight except for the area around the lungs and neck. I thought she had a cervical curve ? What degree curvature does she have with the brace and without ? She sounds like such a sweet little girl. It's so sad she has to go through this. I hope she comes through this with flying colours !!! Guest guest
In the x-ray, her back does look quite straight - and I believe that is due to the brace - they took the x-ray with it on.The white circles on the x-ray are the rivets that hold the straps on the plastic of the brace. The oblong shaped marks are the loops for the Velcro. If you look towards her head you will definitely see her curve. You can also see that her chest really isn't that big, and that is a concern since it could ultimately end up restricting her lung functionality. The problem isn't "what degree is her curve" the problem is all the congenital anomalies that we are dealing with. you also need to remember that in this pic, since she had her brace on, her neck is pretty straight. She has torticollis which has her head tipping to the left and her curve goes to the right. It is hard to see, but there are also hemivertebrae involved in this whole thing. She has Cervical and thoracic spine anomalies, and segmentation between the C-2 and C-7 vertebrae and her ribs are somewhat abnormal. So unfortunately, this is not a cut and dry (not that any of them are) case of having a specific degree of curvature. I wish it were. I would say, however, that the curve is somewhere in the high 50's, low 60's. What Dr. Crawford is talking about now, and as early as July, is the Titanium Rib procedure. The office is getting me in touch with Philadelphia which is participating in this study and has excellent information about it (which you probably knew.) What he hopes to accomplish with this is to lengthen her thoracic spine to help create a large chest area. He did mention that they are still doing clinical trials etc. But he also said that they do have a "hybrid" procedure that uses implements that are already approved to do basically the same thing. However, I got The one thing that happened yesterday that totally pissed me off (sorry for the language) is that my tape recorder wouldn't work correctly, so I probably missed half of what he said on the tape. GRRRRR! Gail Re: X-ray Gail,Enquiring minds want to know, what did the doctor say ? Is the brace doing its job ? Guest guest
Gail, The titanium rib sounds like a great plan of action. Guest guest
I have to say, that because of this group and the wonderful info that sent to me, I suprised Dr. Crawford because I knew what he was talking about! I even said something to the effect of, " If I understand this correctly, there are less than 200 children who have gone through this procedure, is that correct? " Wish I had a pic of his face! LOL As I started to say in my message, I got the impression that he wants to have the actual Titanium Rib, and not the hybrid that he and others have worked with. Although he did say that if she stops holding her own, then he would initiate the hybrid. I do remember him saying when we first started seeing him, that " there is a procedure that we are waiting for the approval to happen, and that is what I see for . " But he didn't use the term at that time. And this time he called it the " Vepa " Never thought I would have to learn all these medical terms. Guest guest
Gail, I have never thought of bringing a taperecorder to these sessions, what a great idea. I could just imagine what his face looked like when you mentioned the TRP, these doctors (especially specialists) really underestimate the ability of parents to learn new technical information. I think the internet(and this group) makes it easy for us. With any new technology comes risks. The TRP is just an FDA " study " at this point. Although its benefits are quite obvious (in terms of lives saved), twenty years from now it may be hailed as a medical breakthrough. On a personal level, my kids recently had a bout with a cold... they recovered in three days flat. Unfortunately I got it and it doesn't want to go away. My nose is so congested, my head feels like it's going to explode. I haven't slept for days!!! Guest guest
Celia, Can I make you some chicken soup and a hot toddy? I despise head colds! Getting the tape recorder was the best thing that I have done. A friend who's daughter has had several medical issues, told me to do it. She said it helps so much because you can go back and listen to the visit if you have questions after the fact. Sometimes it saves you a phone call! I got a pretty basic, handheld micro recorder at Office Depot, I think it was like $30 or less. But is has been invaluable. I also use it when I go to my son's med checks (he has ADHD) I would tell anyone who is looking at a lot of dr visits in their future to get one! I know that right now the TRP is a study. And I have to say that sometimes I hate how slowly the FDA moves on things! I said to my DH "Yeah, it will take 20 years for them to approve this, but it probably took 10 days to approve Viagra!" DH's response was "Well, they all probably need the Viagra!" LOL Hope you are feeling better soon!
