I have AVG installed on my computer and as soon as I clicked on the message

it told me there was a virus and took care of it. You should really have a

virus scanner on your computer and update it frequently. I have mine on

automatic so it updates everyday and runs a full scan every night. AVG is

free for personal use.

Hi all, I also got the new dreaded KLEZ but my Norton 2002 caught it

and I was able to get rid of it. Be careful as this is supposed to

be a tricky one. I guess I should not feel bad about money spent on

the 02 Norton now. , I am so very sorry you have to go

through this too. Good Luck and good eve to you, Patty -- In

This is a game to test your wits. Unfortunately, losing is BIG. The

latest round of virus (much seems to be related to KLEZ) is really

nasty. It seems to try all sorts of 'random' attempts to get you to

open the attachment. I got one today that was supposed to be mail

returned to me because of a delivery problem. 167 kbytes .. I don't

think so! It is only one of three I've received (safely) today.

OK, you've heard this before. If you haven't done it, do it NOW!. Get

a quality antivirus program and get the weekly updates! Norton and

McAfee are two top brands. There are others and also some others that

are really wimpy.

ALSO .. if you use Outlook or Outlook Express, go to the Microsoft

website .. security ..downloads .. and get the patch programs that make

them 'more' virus resistant.

Now, let's get back to discussing DS. It is a whole lot more pleasant.

Fred,

Thanks for the heads up. I've suddenly been awash in these e-mails (some to the group) from unknown participants with mysterious little messages (e.g. "I think you'll like this," etc.) and with attachments. Please, all members, unless you absolutely KNOW who the person is sending an attachment, DON'T OPEN IT! Unfortunately, I've also been overwhelmed with e-mails coming back to me as undeliverable, which I never sent. This leads me to believe that a virus has gotten onto this machine, which I only use for e-mails when on the road.

I've been trying to download an update for the virus protection software, but the site hasn't been willing to let me so far. Sorry if I'm the cause of all this. I'll get it cleaned up--at least on my end.

Hi there. Everybody getting flooded with viruses? We are getting it on the WaveRider list as well.

I am changing the WRlist to a no-attachments list so that this is simply not possible to pass on.

Two defenses on my front line are:

1- www.grisoft.com has a free and updateable virus protection program that has been very effective for me. If the bigger name virus protection programs are TOO HELPFUL or are requiring too much to maintain updated, you all might look into some of the smaller, more "altruistic" virus programs like AVG (www.grisoft.com) or PANDA (www.pandasoftware.com)

2- The worm that is boring holes through our address books will be easily diverted to a dead end if, in your address book (and every sub-folder therein), you create an entry that begins with an asterisk. For example: *redherring- and do not give it an e-mail address, this will be the first e-mail that the worm latches onto and since it does not have an address to resend with, it will be stopped and you will be informed of an infection by receiving the notification mailing: Undeliverable.

Keep safe daily,

Be aware that there is a virus going around today. My antivirus

software found and stopped it but it is circulating widely on the

Internet. My email had the Subject Line: Oh Happy Day and appears to be

connected with the FUNTOWN@... website. Do not open any email

that is from someone that you don't know and even if you do know them be

suspicious.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/06/05/virus.computer.ap/index.html

for the complete story -

NEW YORK (AP) -- A new computer virus that offers hackers full control

of infected PCs, giving them access to critical information such as

passwords and credit-card numbers, was spreading on the Internet.

The virus, dubbed " BugBear.B " by virus experts, follows two other

quickly spreading e-mail viruses seen in recent weeks -- " Sobig.B " and

" Sobig.C " -- but far exceeds them in its ability to do harm and in the

aggressiveness of its spread.

E-mail filtering services company MessageLabs Inc. had blocked 37,400

copies of BugBear.B from 125 countries by midday Thursday, after barely

registering a blip on Wednesday, when the first copies were seen.

I have a significant life on the internet, both in business and in

private. A year and a half ago, the Klez virus set a new standard.

Other viruses had gone through your computer searching for possible

email addresses and sent tainted mail to them. Klez did them one

better. It used one address that it found as the target for the email

and another for the " from: " line. It played stealth and didn't announce

its presence. Because the infected computers couldn't be identified, it

grew to be the biggest infection ever.

In the past couple of weeks we've had two very different attacks. The

Blaster virus went through flaws in the most recent Windows operating

systems. You didn't even need to open an email. It just came through

some port (path) that Microsoft (or your employer) had deliberately left

open. I watched our poor coporate computer support person to from

computer to computer trying to get it fixed.

Then came the SoBig virus which was an email with yet more enticing

lines (like the Klez). It was different in that it very aggressively

sent out emails, not only to the addresses it found but also to other

random ones. Like Klez, it was stealth and hid the identity of the

infected machine.

A side effect of both Klez and SoBig is that many people have been

accused of having infected computers because the infected email received

(by a server or an individual) was presumed to come " from: " them. I've

recently had about 100 of these false accusations.

The giant Microsoft is slowly waking up. If you have one of their

recent operating systems (ME, 2000, or XP), they regularly publish

security patches for them. Go to their website and find them .. and

install them. It is a real pain. I know because I maintain several

family computers and my own at work. This is only STEP ONE.

STEP TWO is to have and run a competent antivirus program. Use only one

because two of them may interfere. All the competent programs need to:

1. Scan your computer once a week.

2. Get new virus information from the internet once a week.

I use Norton Antivirus, but there are others. I have no affiliation,

but Norton is one of several quality programs.

This is an important issue. It takes only one infected computer to

flood many of us with tainted messages and somewhere along the way,

someone who hasn't the patches installed or who hasn't an antivirus

program will get infected and keep the virus going.

Wherever this is all coming from, it has one simple name,

" CyberTerrorism " .

Now back to down syndrome which is a whole lot more cheerful.

We maintain up to date virus protection. However, I did a scan anyway, and

according to McAfee, we are clean.

It is difficult to tell exactly where a virus is coming from, since they

can grab all the addresses in the infected computer's address book and

also use these addresses also as the " From " line. From what I

understand from the McAfee site, there is one virus now that is very

common, and it does this. Our internet provider sends out " Virus

notification " when a virus-infected email is sent to us, showing the

" From " line, subject, and virus type (and removes it, so it never gets

to our home computer). From this information, I was also trying to

figure out which of my friends had the virus, but found that it's

nearly impossible.

For those who are still confused, this is a simple version of I

understand it (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong): 's

computer has a virus. Susie, ny, Annie, and Tommy are all in 's

address book (but they don't know each other). The virus on 's

computer sends itself out with it's message and attachment, and for

example, it might to " To " Tommy, but say " From " Susie (rather than

). It sends another one " To " Susie, " From " ny. Sneaky little

thing! Sometimes, we can make a guess of whose computer is infected,

but these days, it's pretty tough.

So far, between a (1) using Netscape instead of Outlook for email, (2)

having an internet provider that screens, (3) using the weekly McAfee

virus updates, and (4) scanning all email, we have yet to have a virus

(knock on wood!). Hopefully everyone in the group will check their

computers!

This has gotten really tough. The current crop of viruses are really

nasty. They try with a zillion approaches to get you to click on the

attachment. It might be a Microsoft update, a rejected message, or just

" hi " . DO NOT EVER click on any attachment file unless you know exactly

what it is. If you do, there will be TROUBLE and you may not know about

it at all.

The current NASTY viruses hide in your computer. If they let you know

there were there, you might do something. Typically they open your

computer to attack from outside (someone reading your files or inserting

a program of their choice to do many damaging things including looking

for your personal secrets like social security number and credit cards.

They also look at your email and send out email to people whose

addresses they find. They disguise the return adddress to be either

random or another address they found on your computer.

In addition, if you had any virus protection, they disable it. These

things change rapidly enough that unless you have at least weekly virus

definitions, they will pass undected until you are infected.

This is CYBERTERRORISM. It is going on. I've seen many people get

caught including some who thought that they numbered among brilliant

computer scientists.

So, if you don't have one, get an antivirus program, get one! Make sure

that it offers at least weekly virus definition updates. If you are

worried about whether you have a virus, go to either Symantec or

McAbee's websites and get their free programs which will scan your

computer.

Yes, I'm paranoid. My ISP (cyburban) catches most spam and viruses and

puts it into a quarantined file that I have to periodically examine to

see that real mail didn't get blocked. Then, before I download my mail,

I use Mailwasher (www.mailwasher.org, if I remember right) which you can

have either for free or with a small charge. When I download my mail, I

have Norton Antivirus active. It checks all incoming mail and will

check this before I send it.

If you have questions, contact me directly or through .

Rick

p.s. you won't get virus emails from because it strips off all

attachment.

That's data mining - emailing you as a major company such as eBay or

PayPal and " requiring " you to " update your info " so they can have

access to your credit card numbers, etc. Kind of a slimy masquerade

at your expense.
