Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the list. If your looking for great prices on butters and oils check at the bottom of the emails from the list.... you'll find a link to Olivetreesoaps. Thats Kae's site and she has the best prices around! She's also a member of our list. As far as adding oils and butters to M & P I can't help you there... I strickly melt and pour it I'm an HPer. There are plenty of M & Pers on the list who should be able to help you out though. Terri
Guest guest
Hi Terri I did check out the Olivetreesoaps link and loved the prices! Next buying spree...<grin> Ok, I'm sure this is waaay basic but...what's an " HPer " ??? (hot process? Is this making soap bases? How does this differ from cold process?) Guest guest
Morning , Your right HPer is hot process. The only difference between cold process and hot process really is little to no cure time is needed to hot process. The only cure time basically is to let it dry out a bit, (usually about 4-5 days for me) before wrapping. When hot process is done 2-3 hours from starting, it's soap and can be used right away where cold process needs to cure for several weeks before use. Guest guest
, Not to discount what Terri had said, but actually CP can be used after a week or so if it is made correctly. What is usualy called " cure time " is the water evaporating out of the soap and the soap hardening to make it longer lasting. Now if you discount the water from the start you dont have to wait as long. The last few batches I have made, I have discounted the water about 30% and the soap was as hard comming out of the mold as soap that had cured for 6+ weeks. Me, being exicted to try out some new soaps I had made used some after a week or two and no problems with dryness ect... I always insulate good and make sure the soap goes thru a gel stage and I think this is important. To me the major difference between HP and CP is the texture of the end result. CP is much smoother, harder soap (I guess harder would depend on the recipe too). I had found HP soaps tended to be a bit on the spoungy side unless they sit for several weeks as well. This includes HP soap that I had experimented as well as other peoples so I am not putting anybodys soap down. FWIW. These are just my experiences.... CAthy, also, Welcome to the group! Where abouts do you live in our great state of NY? I dont know about shea and cocoa butters going rancid in MP. Maybe some of our MPers on this list can answer that. I am a CPer at heart. Guest guest
Either Vit. E, or else Jojoba might be good too in MP. Just a little tho. ShayeThe Soap Shackwww.mysoapshack.com -----Original Message-----From: Shikatani [mailto:cathys@...]Sent: Friday, November 30, 2001 9:11 PM Subject: hello Hi I'm new to this group as well as to soaping but I'm having a blast so far and have spent way too much $$ already! (too easy! <Grin> I hope to make a business of it next spring (???) and meanwhile, will have fun and test out various techniques, etc. I'd love to make a super moisturizing bar for myself so I bought cocoa butter (shea butter was too expensive retail at the health food store). But I read some soaping instructions from the internet that you shouldn't add cocoa or shea butter to M & P soaps as it'll go bad quickly. It didn't say how quickly....? I've read that you can use Vitamin E as a moisturizer and preservative so it seems like an idea additive. Any idea how much I should add? Any info on experiences working with Vit E or the butters would be most appreciated. Have a great weekend! Guest guest
<<<Now if you discount the water from the start you dont have to wait as long>>>> That would explain the long curing I used to have to do. I never discounted and got so tired of waiting plus I was told when I first started out to cure for at least 4 or 5 weeks. This is why I moved to HP so soon after getting into soaping... sure, making soap was fun doing cp, but I wanted my soap then and now! lol Terri who just got back seeing Colleen at her show today... it was a ZOO!! Guest guest
Thanks for the explanations! I also read from somewhere on the internet about making soap by putting the shavings in an oven proof roasting bag and boiling it for an hour...I guess that's another version of HP? I'd love to hear about the crock pot recipe...I just love the convenience of the crock pot...put food in there and check back 5-10 hours later! <grin> I'm not from NY, though I grew up not far from there (I grew up in Montreal). I'm living on the coast in central California and found out about this group through Colleen. Hope you don't mind a west coaster dropping in... Guest guest
Aww ok, Im not originally a NYer either but ive been here for 20 years. Im a Westerner too, Grew up in South Eastern Idaho. That soap shavings in an an oven proof bag is actually one of many methods of rebatching. HP and CP are both methods of making it from scratch. I love using the crock pot too for food. I use it all the time. Tomorow I am making a roast with potatoes and carrots, all cooked in the crock pot. MMM I can taste it already LOL. Guest guest
I brought up discounting on the soapnuts list years ago and was quickly given " the word " not to even mention it-I had a few sage soapers ;D give me advice but I never heard of going to a 30% reduction-I only do a slight reduction and will have to look into this.I know a certain amount is mandatory for proper chemical processing to take place and you can discount too much too. Thanks Deb > >
