Guest guest
>Hi Charlene, I have one child, adopted dx ASD/PDD she's almost 12. Nonverbal and we've used a variety of things at home with her to further her fine motor skills. Which, we too haven't had great success @ our school in Minnesota:( We started wth a computer and " tried out " through a Parent Training Organization in our state, some adapted keyboards/touch screens etc. But our girl let us know she wanted to be like the rest of us using a stnd.keyboard. I've also gotton some good practice sheets(free!)to work on also. It seems to be a style approach that works for us, probably because the paper work is designed with like 6 levels of developing writing. First we let her 'warm up' with freezer paper taped on the wall/floor or use easel etc. whatever is her mood/mode at intro time, after that then we go to task with the 'paper/table work'. Granted it's only a description of what we've done but maybe there are components that you might see that you could use with your daughter. Is it fair to assume that you now reside in CO? Doesn't your school district/region have an Autism Consultant or Advocate to assist you with the school system to get programming for your son & daughter? Best wishes to you and your family. Guest guest
Does your child receive any occupational therapy? What about a sensory diet? Is he verbal? hitting and pinching could be a communication tool (frustration) - or a need for sensory input (or removal/reduction) Penny Hello Hello Everyone~~ Just joined your list and wanted to introduce myself. Guest guest
Penny~~ Thanks for your interest. I just read the article on DMG and B6 vitamins and we did try this before my son had any behavior problems and I just may give them a try again. As far as OT, Kristian receives one hour a week and 2 half-hours of speech therapy. He's in an autistic classroom 2/3rds daily and l/3rd in a spec. ed situation. The pinching seems to occur, unfortunately, when he does not get his way; if he wants something, if he doesn't want to do the prescribed work, etc. He is somewhat verbal, many times one word or strings of words and sometimes sentences. He does know what everything is. He receptive skills are far more advanced than his verbal skills. What are your ideas on sensory input? Thanks again~~ Rose Hello Hello Everyone~~ Just joined your list and wanted to introduce myself. I have three children. My youngest is 8 and struggles daily with autism. I truly love this program From my own experience, supplements are completely unnecessary. DH and I have been doing BFL since Jan 14th (almost at the 6 month mark!! Woowoo!) with good results and we've been sticking to only whole food meals (using protein powder for cooking certain things) and our supplementation consists of Metamucil when we're lacking other Fiber sources and a multivitamin when we remember to take it. My Marine Body Builder of a friend says that most of the weight lifting supplements out there are all just placebos anyway So.. since I'm getting good results without the chemicals.. why waste the money. But that's just my opinion and what works for me
Guest guest
Unless you are doing the official Challenge it is not at all necessary to use any supplements. For convenience, many use myoplex shakes and protein powder to make your own shakes or use in recipes. But if you don't want to use supplements it isn't going to impede your progress in any way. Much good luck to you and your husband on your first challenge! Rita Hello Hello, HI, my name is Kim and I'm new to the group, my husband and I started the BFL challenge on Monday (day 5!!) I found your group and just have to tell you that reading your postings have been so very helpful!! I was a binge eater, we're talking 6 ice cream sandwiches without coming up for air. Sad I know, and I have the body to show for it. I'm 36 years old and came to the point where I actually thought, oh well, I'm getting old just let it go..get some stretchie pants and muu-muu shirts...that thought scared me! Was I really ready to give up? Anyway, I had bought the BFL book about a year and a half ago, looked at it..oohed and aahed over the transformations and tossed it in the closet. After my brush with stretchy pants..I remembered it, dug it out and my husband and I started planning for our new bodies. So far so good! I am a little confused about what type of supplements I should take, would you please point me in the right direction?? Kim
Guest guest
Hi Kim and welcome. I'm starting my challenge over this week, so I'm at the same place you are! As for supplements, there are many schools of thought on this. I only supplement what my body NEEDS that it can't get on it's own. So, really, I take a vitamin and EFA (Udo's oil) everyday. Other than that, I drink a myoplex shake once in a great while, if I didn't have time to prepare a meal. I really want to see what my body can do on it's own! That way, I'll feel any success or failure is mine to claim. Astra
Guest guest
Personally, I don't use supplements except for the occassional protein bar or shake. I don't think you necessarily *need* them. However, the bars and shakes (Myoplex) can provide easy meal replacements if you're strapped for time (and high on cash!). Just check the nutrtional info and aim for a ratio of fat/protein/carb of about 20/40/40 percent to 20/30/50 percent (the former is good for fat loss, the latter is good for muscle gains... but either work well). As for pills, I stay away. They tend to be expensive and may contain nervous-system stimulants, which make a sensitive body like mine go nuts . Best of luck! P.S.: Have you checked out 'Overcoming Binge Eating', by Fairburn? It's quite good.

Guest guest
Hi Kim! Welcome to the board~ When I first started almost a year ago I didn't do any supps...I did take an occasional meal replacement such as the myoplex lite shakes, protein powders, or the protein bars. But the longer I did this the more I realized that sometimes my body needed. This would be the following~ 1]a good mutiple womens vitamin that is time released 2]flax oil [or you can use UDO's] these are EFA's[essential fatty acids]which our bodies need to operate properly and it helps to reduce cravings, and when you get enough of the healthy fats the body will release the bad fat faster..BTW most people are deficent in getting in their EFA's. Also I found that I wasn't getting enough from just eating salmon 3 times a week. 3]Glutamine, yes this is awesome it helps with muscle recovery...so you can truly hit your 10's and not feel the dreaded soreness for days afterwards. 4]sugar free citrucel fiber supp. daily [to help keep you regular since a high protein diet can cause constipation] Also I can not stress enough the importance of drinking lots of water each day...most of the oldtimers here and professional athletes aim for a minimum of 1 gallon a day...it helps flush away carb bloat that you get after free day and it also helps flush away the fat that we are trying to get rid of. Hope this helps...of course this is just what I have found over time that has me with a healthier lifestyle. Joann

Guest guest
Thank you, . My stomach is still making menacing sounds and still crampy, but I have been able to rest and eat bland foods today with only moderate discomfort. I have so many chronic health problems.....it tends to make me (and others, too, I'm sure) get too accustomed to feeling bad. The danger in that is that when an infection or a new problem occurs, I tend to just attribute it to the many conditions I am already grappling with. I learned a terrible lesson for me and others to benefit from when I got food poisoning back in May, which caused a domino effect of intestinal bacterial infection and my IBS spinning out of control to a life threatening degree. I had mentally trivialized my illness for 3-4 days by thinking, " oh, it's just my IBS acting up again....and " oh, I just feel so achy because of my severe arthritis and other bone and skeletal problems " ....until my temp shot up to nearly 105! I am a tiny person in the best of times, and never have weighed much more that 100 except for my two pregnancies (which literally took the wind out of my sails). My normal, " healthy " weight is about 95 or so for my frame. My metabolism problem won't allow me to gain and maintain more than that. My thyroid has hovered at hyperthyroid for several years now. My food poisoning episode caused my weight to drop to 84 pounds in a matter of about 4 days! That is not enough for ANY adult to weigh. I literally begged my long time family GP for a feeding tube, but he insisted that I first try Nulev. It has helped, but not really enough. Interestingly, my wonderful dog, Roscoe (a " Toto " dog whom I bought from a homeless man) contracted the same bacterial intestinal infection because I fed him my leftovers from the restaurant I ate at. Roscoe is a gentle spirit, and a calm, loving soul. He always knows when I'm ill, and comes to lay his head on me, even when I am vomiting. He is on special stomach medicine, too, and a special diet from the vet. Fortunately, Roscoe is a trooper, and an otherwise healthy dog-child. I am thankful, as he is my dear friend and loyal companion. My two dear sons (, 16, and Isaac, 15) are my best friends. We tale turns taking care of one another, which is as it should be. We must pull together in order to survive, and we are strongly bonded and the better for it. Please forgive my rambling. I am soooooo tired. I must go back to bed now. I am very glad to be a member of this wonderful group. I welcome emails from each and every one of you at any time. I have a deep well of love and compassion just waiting to be tapped into. My family is made up of a bunch of NASCAR nuts. We have spent several weekends in Charlotte and Concorde. We lived in South Carolina for about 5 years. My name is Beth, and I'm mommy to twins, Austin who has DS, and Dakota, who doesn't. They're 5, going on 20, I think. Again, Welcome to the list!
