Guest guest
Hi I've mummy to , SMA2 and he's going on 6 come Oct - he's my big boy! If you have any questions do ask away. I'm no expert or genius but I've been on the SMA road a *little* longer and hope that can help you somewhat. However, please note that I don't live in the States or Canada so won;t be able to help with things like insurance! ;-) Glad that Glenn is home now and will think and pray for him to STAY home! Cheerio hello I think I've introduced myself once before, but it was a while ago. Anyway, my name is Sinclair, and I have a 10 month old son named Glenn with SMA type 1. He was diagnosed at 6 months of age in Mid-March, and since then the longest stretch we have been out of the hospital is two weeks. We finally got home last Monday after a two- month stint at Childrens Hospital, so I'm hoping we can be home for a while now! http;//community.webshots.com/user/peppermintmocha

Guest guest
It really does make you wonder what rocks they dig some of these people out from under doesn't it. I haven't had experiences as bad as some of these mainly because went to private schools. He had to be " tested " at age 18 to be declared disabled for SS. The guy didn't use any standardized test but spent awhile with while we waited in the hall. said he was asked to count so he counted to 10 and quit. The guy never found out he could read and write. It was a farce but we got the disability so it was OK. They also had school records and things from his doctors. We were told he would be evaluated again in 3 years and it hasn't happened yet. That was 20 years ago. I have only dealt with one woman at the ss office who knows anything and I have told her so. She says the others know as much as she does but I said you'd never know it to talk to them. Can you believe a teacher writing a note like the one quoted? And she was probably the ablest so was chosen for the job. I wonder if any of them finished grade school. It's downright disgraceful. So please bear with me if I ask questions that have been asked many times before. My son has Autism and DS, he lost his language skills around three. Any one else out there have his happen too? Hello , Welcome to the list! I hope my post turns out all right. Two of my older children decided that since I did such a wonderful job raising them that I'd make the perfect babysitter for their 6 children for the weekend!! I wonder where they learned to lie!!! LOL I'll tell you about my son to see if you can find any similarities. My son is totally nonverbal. We continue to have him with a private speech therapist once weekly, and with his therapist at school. has only ever said 3 words while looking in a mirror, perfectly, one time several years ago. Of course I had mirrors all over the house after that, but nothing ever happened again. That session showed me that everything my son needs to have speech works - just not together. He has never said another word though he makes sounds. I can see that his brain does not link with this speech center and I and his physician suspect the autism is the reason why. For years I assumed my son was very low functioning, but in the past year or so with the aid of his speech therapist we take him to, he has progressed enormously. She has taught my son that he needs to communicate, that it has a purpose and we went with his choice of communication, which turns out to be sign language. That was something all the other speech therapists missed. They all insisted that he blow bubbles, keep forming letters with his lips, all something he was always unable to do. I have watched my son try to sing tunes he loves and always his mouth, voice, tone and pitch are out of his control. has used fantastic signs that he has made up on his own for things he wants to tell us. We then get the actual sign from the American Sign Language book and his therapist continues to build his vocabulary. Many of his signs are modified by him and we continue to update his sign book which shows the signs he knows with his modification. also has motor skill difficulty which cause the modifications of many signs. Again, welcome to the list and I hope to read more about in the future. Judy Keller, mom to , 11, DS/Autism

Guest guest
Hi Judy, Welcome to the group! From the introduction of your son - it sounds like you found the right group. My daughter is only 6 1/2 is also non-verbal although we hear a word about once a year or so very clearly and appropriately. You gotta " cherish the moment " cuz you won't hear another word for maybe a year or so! : ). Right now we are going with the PECS system as she seems better able to scan pictures than do signs. I've been a part of the list for maybe a year but there are a lot more seasoned veterans here who have a wealth of knowledge. Sorry this has to be short but welcome and believe me, no question is too dumb to ask. That's what it's all about. Blessings, a
Guest guest
, so happy to hear from you...it's been forever. What have been doing these days? I hope that the humeria continues to work for you. I am on my third round of MTX today and I am sicker then a dog, bad stomach and gut...but it has helped the joint and muscle pain and has brought down the fevers and the sweats are gone. So with this improvement, its worth the gut ache a few days a week. Keep us posted as to how you are doing. Take care..
