Guest guest
Every time I see a medical professional now and the ask the standard question " Are you allergic to any medications? " , I always respond that I'm allergic to statins and morphine. I include morphine in the mix since my body seems to treat it like water. If I ever need a strong pain killer, I want something that is more likely to work instead of them trying morphine first. Steve stephen ottridge wrote: > > > You don't need to convince your doctor. Guest guest
,Just wanted to mention that the survey can be uploaded to the "Files" section of the website so that any group members can access it. Just select to notify the group of the upload. This listserv does accept attachments, but does not allow them to be saved in the archives, and some members use computers in facilities whose internet security does not allow attachments. It appears that there is a lot of interest.Owner/Moderator, Bariatric Nutrition Dietitians Discussion Group+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Bethel, MS, RD, LD/N, CLTRegistered Dietitian specializing in chronic conditions related to food sensitivities, allergies, and intolerances*1526 Nuremberg Boulevard, Punta Gorda, FL 33983-6015Telephone: 941-624-5002; E-mail: lbethelrd@...; Local and distances services* Irritable bowel, migraines, fibromyalgia, arthralgias, gas, reflux, esophagitis, indigestion, celiac disease,Crohn’s, colitis, sinusitis, psoriasis, eczema, autism spectrum disorders/ADD/ADHD, and others++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Re: Hello Hi , I was unable to attend but would love to see the survey. Guest guest
I'm not sure what's in your " coconut " vitamins, but the probably won't hurt you, and might even be of benefit. In any case, I wouldn't worry. If you search the archives of this list, you will see lots of information about products to control facial wasting. Check those files, and come back with questions. Guest guest
Hi, you sound like me as far as avoidance goes. I have all the LL DVD's too including reflexology and very rarely use them even tho I know how great they are. Everyone on this list is so helpful and friendly. How about if we make a goal to get with this program together. I am sorry too for what you are going through. I am reading a wonderful book right now I would recommend to you. It's called The Best Year of Your Life by Debbie Ford. I really believe I can change my old habits and this book is helping me truly believe it and act on it. Also a little saying I love is Action before Motivation. I also have a few others but they are upstairs so I'll send them later. Glad you're here and let's just do it! Guest guest
Welcome to Cast! There is always a bit of a transition when they first go into a cast. I think sitting is a bit harder than standing. Try a bean bag chair to help support him a bit while learning to sit again. They do catch on quickly. As far as overheating, we usually stay inside during the hottest parts of the day. Also I know is working on some cooling vests to keep the kids cool outside. I don't know whether you are getting a Mehta style EDF cast or a Risser cast. I would absolutely cast with an EDF mehta cast to get any correction possible. They hold better then braces for progressive infantile scoliosis, are often less hot. Please let me know if you have other questions. Jenn Mommy to Cole, 2.5 years, 1st brace from Rochester after 10 months in 5 casts, 2 degrees down from 47 out of cast/brace How do you keep your little ones from over heating? Guest guest
Hi , First off, have they ruled out that he doesn't have congenital scoliosis (scoliosis caused by a hemi vertebra, fused ribs, etc.) ? With so many other anomalies I would want to be sure it isn't a bone based problem rather than idiopathic (unknown nature) scoliosis. If it is bone based, casting may not work since the root of the problem causing the curves would still be present and may in some circumstances make things worse. Has your son had an MRI to rule out bone malformations? An MRI is the best way to check for that. Other than that, if your son does indeed have idiopathic infantile scoliosis, then yes, he will be back to doing his "normal" things soon, the first cast is the hardest. It took my daughter about a week or 2 to get back to her "old self". Most doctors don't move you to a brace until the curves are under 10 degrees on a standing x-ray out of cast. The time it takes to get to that point varies from child to child. Jane Grace, 3 1/2 yrs, congenital scoliosis (hemi removed 9/09, in 4th cast to "fix" compensatory curves caused by the hemi, moving to a brace on FRIDAY! yeah! ), born with moderate omphalocele containing 3/4 of her liver, fully repaired. Guest guest
Jane- Yes they did an MRI because at first his ortho did think it was congenital, so the fact that it wasn't stumped him a bit. We did the watch and wait along with the brace. I was not a fan of the brace, but he still believes it is the way to go. Our plan for now is to do the best with the cast, and discuss exactly what his curve is and the best way to help him at our appt in 3 weeks. He is doing better everyday in the cast. It was so hard to put him in it because he just learned to climb up on things and now he can't again. I am the mom of 6 children, Hannah is going to be 11 in a few weeks. I am happy to have another mom on the list who has an older child. We learn so much from people who have already experienced so much. I hope that you are able to find the services that you need. Connie In a message dated 5/26/2010 7:39:08 A.M. Guest guest
Hi , Where is Timmy being casted? We questioned it ourselves initially but Noelle was in the same ballpark and now she is doing just great! Noelle still overheats in her brace when she is outdoors. A cooling vest may help, lots of cold beverages and alternating between outside and inside activities. Good luck! - Noelle's mommy, 3 years oldRochester NYCasted 8 times for 1 1/2 years and in first brace!reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III From: Baker <tkbaker05@...>Subject: Helloinfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 3:42 PM Hello all! I am new to the group. My son just had his first cast put on Friday, 5/21. He is 2 years and 4 months, and has many other issues including a heart defect, diabetes, and had a gtube up until a few days ago. I am happy to report that besides this pesky scoliosis, all is well with him. They found his scoliosis last Oct., and we tried the brace, but with the gtube and the fact that he had just learned how to walk, it didn't work. His ortho has put a cast on, even though he feels that Timmy just needs the brace. We have about 3 weeks to decide what to do. His degree is at about 55. He is running around in his cast, but he couldn't sit up, so yesterday they removed a little around his hips to make him more comfy. I just had a few questions about the cast. How do you keep your little ones from over heating? Do they learn how to do the normal things quickly? When is a brace put on after the cast? I am worried about his decision, but I would do anything for my son! Baker mom to Timmy, 1st cast
Guest guest
We live near Milwaukee, and he was casted at Children's hospital. Our ortho is the only doctor that does that in the area. I believe it is a risser cast. His cast looks so similar to the pictures on the website, but I don't know the difference between risser and EDF. We could contact the Shriner's hospital of Chicago, but we wouldn't know who to contact. Does anyone know this info?? Guest guest
Hello , welcome to CAST! It sounds like you have already been through a lot, you have such a positive attitude! Most kids really do bounce back in the casts across the boards, it usually does take a couple of weeks or more to get back to doing everything, but they do improve every day in the first cast and amaze us parents! I agree as someone said that the first cast is the hardest. In progressive cases of infantile scoliosis, bracing often does not hold the curve from getting worse. A risser cast is done or applied on a "flat" table, a regular table, and a Mehta Method/EDF cast is applied on a 3 dimensional traction table, with the idea being to get the spine in the straightest position possible, using their own natural growth to improve the curve (s). Scoliosis is a 3 dimensional problem, it curves and "corkscrews". The younger you start properly casting, the better chance you have of avoiding spinal surgeries, which must be done every 6 months or less. While it's not a complete cure for every child, for many it is, and proper casting can at least put off the surgeries for as long as possible, to allow for precious growth time of the child's body. Mehta casts also have specific window cut-outs, a large, mushroom shaped cut-out in the front and usually a smaller one on the back. I think I saw in a later post that you asked about Chicago Shriners. I have heard great things about that hospital on this group, and I'm sure a member will post the contact info for you soon. We adore Shriners and they are doing the most cutting edge work in this field, to be honest, Shriners docs are among the few top ortho surgeons in the world who are doing casting properly right now. As far as heat, we are 15 months into casts and we have had no big problems. We have air conditioning in our home and stay in malls, etc. on very hot days. Ther will be cooling vests available soon, too, we haven't used one yet. You sound like a wonderful Mom!
