UNDP/SC/2005/037 Date of Issue: 8 June 2005 Closing Date: 22 June 2005 Post Title : Research Associate Organization : United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Duty Station : New Delhi Duration : One Year Type of Contract : Service Contract This vacancy is open to applicants of either sex. Preference will be given to equally qualified women candidates. Background: UNDP is committed to support national and state level responses to HIV epidemic. Over the years of work with National AIDS Control Organization and other stakeholders the focus of UNDP's support has been on: facilitating greater involvement of people living with HIV through strengthening capacities and facilitating formations of networks at state and sub-state levels; strengthening capacities for strategic planning through supporting research studies, preparing tools and supporting pilot demonstration projects; and advocacy for mainstreaming HIV into development work of a varied range of development partners. Currently UNDP is engaged in undertaking Burden of Disease Study and the Socio-economic Impact of HIV/AIDS, Feasibility Study on Health Insurance for accessing treatment for AIDS; Needs Assessment study of people living with HIV/AIDS; scoping study to understanding special vulnerabilities of women living with HIV/AIDS. All these studies were initiated at different times and they are therefore at different levels of advancement. It is expected that the findings of these studies will inform the programme formulation at national as well as state level. UNDP proposes to recruit a Research Associate for technically backstopping the studies, ensuring timely delivery of analysis and findings in order to inform the national and state level programme formulation. The Research Associate will also identify research gaps in HIV/AIDS and prepare new research proposals. Duties and Responsibilities: • Review of the study protocols and designs and initial findings and reports available; • Discussions with UNDP and NACO and the involved SACS and the implementation partners; • Provide substantive inputs and facilitate collation and analysis of data collected; • Coordinate / facilitate scheduling of study specific advisory committee meetings periodically and ensure incorporation of the recommendations of the committee into study; • Prepare periodic reports for UNDP to apprise of developments and status; • Facilitate timely completion of studies and preparation of reports; • Facilitate organization of dissemination workshops; • Initiate preparation of policy notes based on study findings; • Identify, research gaps to prepare pipeline proposals for studies and research; • Initiate/take lead in undertaking research project/s. • Maintain data base of relevant research institutions/ experts ; • Any other tasks assigned. Educational Qualifications: • Masters degree in Social Sciences Experience: • 1-2 years of research experience in HIV/AIDS • The incumbent must have a significant understanding of the National HIV/AIDS program and the social and economic dimensions of HIV/AIDS. • Familiarity with working in an international organization on development aspects of HIV/AIDS. Knowledge and Skills: • Strong research, writing and presentation skills. • Working knowledge of computers including MS Office package, essential. • Expertise in data management packages • Ability to work independently and as a team player in a multi-cultural environment. • A thorough understanding of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Languages: • Proficiency in spoken and written English essential. Knowledge of one or two Indian languages will be an asset.
