Dear ,

Your description of your daughter sounds just like mine!!!! And

Annie can not take decongestants either (couldn't anyway now because they can

interact badly with SSRIs). But I recall giving her some ONCE when she was

little. Whoa boy, look out. She was terribly reactive to red dye as well, and

it may have been grape or cherry medicine - I can't remember anymore. Red dye

used to cause her to wig out completely - like a kid with severe ADHD.

As far as ADD goes, it is still not completely clear to any of us

whether Annie has true ADD or is just unable to focus or concentrate due to

her OCD. Before she started the Adderall this year she wasn't able to do any

homework, or pay enough attention in class to learn. Until this year she was

always at the top of the class (and in the gifted program) but this year she

started to get mainly F's. The Adderall makes a huge difference so I have

given up trying to clarify whether this is really ADD or not. Her

psychiatrist has recently decided to treat it as such, instead of focusing on

it as a side effect of her OCD. Who knows. I know that during a bad OCD

flare-up (such as we're having now) she can't think clearly at all, with or

without Adderall!! This week she would leave her head behind if it weren't

attached to her neck.

As far as weight gain goes, Paxil has a reputation for causing

weight gain more than some other SSRIs, particularly in grown ups. It make

Annie gain some when she was on it.

Good luck, and welcome back.

Teaching 7th graders? Wow. I admire you.

Dear ,

Thanks for the response! How old is your daughter? I've been encouraging Maia

to check out the OCD Kids group--she's just not an e-mail kid yet. But she has

expressed her desire--more than once--to meet other kids with OCD. I had wanted

to go to the Conference this year--definitely not in our budget though.

I think I will talk to Maia's Dr. about Paxil/Adderall. Time to explore the

next steps.

And I'm not sure anyone should admire me for taking on 7th graders. Tonight I

totally blew up after a day of whiny, post TAAS testing students with spring

fever, 2 hours of construction drilling outside my classroom, my very over-tired

and oversensitive child on my hands, and a long listening session last night

with my depressed husband. I know I'm supposed to find time to take care of

myself--I'm just not sure how to fit it in...!

Thanks again for letting me know you're out there...

  • 5 years later...

R.,

Thinking of you and sending positive energy your way. It's snowy and sunny

here at the same time today and it made me think of you. What may at first

appear dark and cold turns out to be a gift of warmth and light. Just

think...there's someone in Heaven who's always putting in a good word for you

and yours.

How many days til you can talk to ?

Prayerfully,

:-)

Made me feel that way, too. It's pretty cold here in North Central Texas, also.

Love to all,

Melinda :o)
