Hi Ck,

Your visit wasn't that bad and let's face it just a teenager. Ian is

fortunate to have such dedicated and loving staff. He sounds as if he has

made great strides.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

We got home from visiting with Ian a couple of hours ago. We had a

wonderful time, though there were a few moments there...

In general, Ian is doing marvelously. One thing I noticed in particular is

that he is very independent in his eating now. He used to ask me to cut his

food all the time, but now he didn't ask, just cut his food himself (except

once, when he ran into some tough pizza crust, and only after he'd tried it

for a while on his own). He tells me all the time to leave him alone, to

let him do his thing, to stop being such a mother. :)

The first time we had a problem was leaving a restaurant on Friday night.

He'd been just fine at the restaurant, but he was upset that he couldn't

ride in our friend's car and refused to leave the restaurant. After a long

while, it got to the point where we felt we had to lift and carry him out --

and he struggled -- and two people coming into the restaurant asked if they

should call 911 and were we kidnapping him. We did resolve the issue after

a while, but only after rearranging where people were sitting in the two

cars going back to the village.

The next day, we all drove up to Utica, a 45-minute drive, to go to Toys R

Us, where Ian was going to pick out some birthday presents from distant

grandparents (who had sent us the money to buy the presents) and from these

friends who were with us. Ian was great while we were there, and chose his

things and we all paid, but just as we were leaving, he noticed something

else he wanted. It was something pretty expensive, and we offered him the

option of returning something he had already chosen and then he could get

this new thing, and he refused to do that, refused to leave the store,

refused to even move. We stood there with him about 45 minutes before --

and this was unbelieve -- his beloved school aide walked over (remember,

we're in a city about 40 miles away!). As soon as he saw her he calmed

right down, agreed to the switch, and left willingly. We had a few other

incidents the rest of the weekend, but nothing we couldn't handle fairly

quickly.

The party was this afternoon, and was attended by his housemates and

classmates, as well as several of his 1:1 aides and his classroom teacher.

Some of these people came to the party on their own time, which I find

amazing and inspiring, and brought presents, which we really didn't expect

or desire, and they were very generous to Ian with their love and attention.

He was in his glory, surrounded by friends and family and people he so

obviously adores. We had cake and ice cream, he opened his presents, and

that was it -- an hourlong party, simple and wonderful.

Ian refused to say goodbye to us and ordered us to leave. It was hard to

leave him again, as it always is, but we took videotape and have already

watched it, and it's good to see him so happy and growing up so well.

CK,

Mom to Ian (2/89),

(9/90),

and Rose (6/94)

Dear , belated happy birthday wishes to you!

My daughters is the same day, she just turned 13. I had 19 of them over here for the afternoon water baloon fight, and I still havent figured out how many she crammed in the motor home for the night, supposed to be 6- but I cooked pancakes for almost 3hrs.

Sorry you didnt get your chocolate cake. We eat a lot of gooey chocolate cakes here, but she didnt want chocolate this year, so I made a big white sheet cake with the party frosting. I usually make it with pudding & whip cream, mmmmmmm, chocolate whip cream! (You can do that with the sugar free instant pudding & a sugar free cool whip) I made a triple citrus cheesecake for the family dinner, lemons, limes & orange, it was pretty good, but I think I like it better plain. I have made them with blended cottage cheese to replace a lot of the cream cheese, and couldn't tell the difference, really. Splurging a little is safer than dropping your bs that low, please be careful.

Heres wishing you keep improving all year! Have a good one,
